Tentative examination dates for this recruitment: Week of 05/03/22 – Written examination Week of 06/21/22 – Performance examination

PLEASE NOTE: Due to mandated safety requirements, no one who is over 275 lbs. will be allowed to operate the BWP bucket truck to climb the ladder. Operating a bucket truck and using ladders are an essential function of the job. If you are over this weight limit you will not be eligible to participate in the recruitment process and cannot be considered for the position. A weigh-in will take place during your performance examination.

Under direct supervision of a journeyman, to work in field and laboratory testing of electrical and electronic equipment and materials used in a power utility while fulfilling the training and educational requirements of the Test Technician Apprenticeship Program of the City of Burbank; and perform related work as required.

Essential Functions

Assists journey level Test Technicians in inspecting, testing, calibrating and repairing such electrical and electronic equipment as power protective and control relays, supervisory control systems, telemetering, switchboard, portable recording and indicating instruments, printing and recording equipment, and electric meters including power interchange, regulators, capacitors, transformers generators, excitation equipment, communications cables, quadraphasers, electronic equipment, feeder voltage regulators, power circuit breakers, and control board wiring; assists in performing high potential insulation and power plant and generator start-up efficiency tests; learns and assists in performing tests on energized equipment; keeps supplies and tools in proper order; learns to use and operate various tools and equipment used in the trade; may be required to perform duties in the handling, cleanup and disposal of hazardous materials; completes after-hour classes and receives on-the-job instruction and training to become progressively more skilled and able to work more independently; drives on City business.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of – basic electricity and electronics.

Skill in – operating common tools in mechanical work.

Ability to – learn electrical test techniques and procedures; learn and operate varied electrical testing instruments and equipment; follow oral and written directions; learn and employ safe work practices; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.

Education/Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent at time of appointment.

Special Conditions & Requirements: Applicants must be 18 years of age at time of appointment; employees in this classification, who are required by applicable laws and regulations to have respiratory protection, shall comply with the American National Standards Institute’s requirements on Practices for Respiratory Protection. COLOR VISION: Keen color perception.

License & Certificates: Valid California Class “C” Driver’s License or equivalent at time of appointment.

Supplemental Information

Desirable Qualifications: Completion of electrical or electronic classes.
