Job Description : V12

The Animal Caretaker, in the University Laboratory Animal Resources Department (ULAR) will be responsible for ensuring good husbandry, nutrition, and sanitation of animals used for research, testing, and educational purposes. The incumbent is also responsible for monitoring compliance with institutional animal care and use policies and federal laws.

The primary responsibilities include: providing all laboratory animals with food and water at all times and administering medication, as needed; handling, identifying and restraining animals; performing daily visual checks of laboratory animals; determining age and gender of animals, and weaning and handling neonate babies; ensuring that all animals are tagged and that cages are properly identified; and performing physical examinations of laboratory animals. In addition, the incumbent aids in the prevention, control, and treatment of diseased and injured animals, and assists with providing guidance to ULAR users regarding handling and caring of laboratory animals. The incumbent also operates mechanical equipment such as cage washing machines, the Hydropac water delivery system, and autoclaves. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
At least six months of directly related experience handling laboratory animals. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrated ability to work with and handle large animals.
Demonstrated ability to continuously lift 50lbs.
Strong organizational skills, along with the ability to be detail-oriented and to handle multiple tasks.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated computer skills, along with the ability to operate standard office equipment and software including MS Office.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with diverse population of students, faculty and staff.
Ability to work holiday and weekend hours, as needed.

Preferred:

Experience in animal husbandry and behavior.
Experience in cage washing.

American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification at ALAT level.
