Job Description : Archivist Open to: Internal and External Applicants Full-Time or Part-Time Status: Full-Time, 12 months Staff Job Type: Salaried/Exempt Position Summary or Faculty Qualifications

The Archivist is responsible for documenting, organizing, and housing Archives and Special Collections materials, for the basic preservation of those materials, and for filing, shelving, and retrieving Archives and Special Collection materials. The Archivist facilitates the use and study of the collections by the SJU community and outside scholars and supplies materials as appropriate.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Develops, arranges and describes archival collections in accordance with accepted standards and practices
Creates finding aids using contemporary tools in accordance with national standards.
Creates online finding aids using Encoded Archival Description (EAD) or other markup tools.
Develops and implements procedures for the acquisition, processing, and preservation of archival materials.
Solicits and receives archival materials from campus departments, offices, the University Press, and others.
Appraises materials, determines preservation and conservation issues, and determines best practices.
Promotes collections through collaboration with other SJU departments, and proposes online exhibits, publications, presentations, instructional sessions, and other outreach activities.
Facilitates study and use of archival and special collections materials by SJU community and outside researchers. Schedules research consultations and develops knowledge of related Catholic and Jesuit collections.
Serves as support person for reference questions regarding archival and special collections materials, and supplies materials as appropriate. Consults with supervisor on questions involving materials of a sensitive nature or that might be used by the media or other outside group.
Photographs archival objects and digitizes print materials.
Creates and updates records to support processing and conservation tracking (e.g., CatalogIt).
Monitors physical storage conditions and performs basic in-house mending of worn and damaged books.
Attends meetings, workshops, and training sessions as related to job responsibilities.

Secondary Responsibilities: Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:

Must be able to lift heavy books and journals up to 20 lbs., to shelve and retrieve materials from shelves up to 84” in height, and to push book trucks through the library
Must be able to pack and unpack boxes
Must be able to manipulate physical materials while retrieving, filing, and digitizing
Must be able to perform data entry for extended periods of time

Minimum Requirements:

MLS degree from ALA-accredited library program, archival certification
At least 3 years of experience in archives and special collections
Experience working with archival and special collections materials and conservation/preservation procedures
Demonstrated ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and with a strong attention to detail
Working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office, Google Suite
Positive customer service orientation
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications:

Experience using digital imaging equipment (scanners, printers) and image and video editing software
Knowledge of archival theory and practice
Familiarity with data structure and content
Familiarity with standard description for archival materials and special collections
Bachelor’s degree
Academic library experience
