WHAT DOES A CASE AIDE DO?

A DCS Case Aide works in the field, in collaboration with the case management team, and provides a variety of services to families and children in various social service programs. Alternative work hours may be required, including overtime, weekends and holidays at the discretion of the supervisor. A day in the life of a DCS Case Aide can look like:

Under immediate supervision, provides a variety of services to children
Assists clients with application processes; provides case assistance to participants involved in child safety services
Engages, observes and interacts with children to include, but not limited to performing lice treatments, changing diapers, assisting with potty training, bathing young children and providing comfort
Provides trauma informed care to children
Provides clerical support to staff and clients
Transports children to their respective placement
Performs housekeeping functions to include, but not limited to laundry, cleaning dishes,
preparing meals (for all ages) and cleaning tasks

Participates in a variety of professional meetings and delivers goods, as requested
Performs other duties appropriate to the assignment

WHAT KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES ARE HELPFUL?

Knowledge of:

General current state, federal and district laws and policies regarding child welfare services
General resources available in the community that may be utilized on behalf of clients
General policies, procedures and practices of court foster care review board with regards to cases involving custody and placement of children
Developmental and behavioral problems of children
Cultural environment and community influences on the behavior and development of individuals
Computers and software (Microsoft Office Suite), mobile devices, digital calendars (Outlook) & video conferencing (Microsoft Teams).

Skill in:

Establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships
General clerical functions such as, data entry and filling
Eliciting and gathering information
De-escalating situations
Modeling professional behavior with clients
Time management and multi-tasking
Addressing hostile situations (e.g. terminating visits if harmful to clients)
Written, interpersonal, and observation skills

Ability to:

Plan work routines and implement work assignments
Identify resources available in the community
Learn information on human and social services; welfare services
Learn critical State, Federal and local laws concerning placement, custody and treatment of children
Gain understanding of the effects and problems of foster care; social intellectual and behavioral problems of developmentally disabled children
Adhere to general policies, procedures and practices of court foster care review board with regards to cases involving custody
and placement of children

Learn how to identify developmental and behavioral problems of children
Comply with casework principles and practices
Gain understanding of cultural environment and community influences on behavioral and development of individuals
Interpret and apply eligibility criteria
Learn and adhere to DCS policies and regulations applicable to assigned programs
Comprehend and follow moderately complex written and oral instructions
Organize data in a logical and coherent manner
Prepare written reports accurately in a prescribed format
Actively listen and provide supportive attention to clients
Operate a computer and utilize various software
Learn and adhere to DCS policies and regulations applicable to assigned programs
Comprehend and follow moderately complex written and oral instructions

Acquire and/or maintain CPR Certification or Re-Certification during initial training

WHAT IS REQUIRED TO BE A CASE AIDE?

High school diploma or GED
Valid Arizona issued driver’s license.
Level one Fingerprint Clearance card – Arizona.

Selected candidates must be able to pass a background investigation and DCS Central Registry check.
Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12)

Critical Response Stipend :
The Arizona Department of Administration has made Federal funds available for DCS employees that are performing client-facing work in the field. These funds are a temporary stipend and applies to select DCS positions only. The stipend is an additional 10% of the current hourly rate of pay. This temporary stipend is available through June 30, 2022.

Bi-Lingual Stipend :
DCS offers a Bi-Lingual Stipend to all interested and eligible DCS Employees who successfully complete a language proficiency exam. Qualifying employees will receive a $500 annual stipend paid in equal increments.

Retirement:

All DCS positions participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).

Enrollment eligibility becomes effective after 27 weeks of employment.
