Job Description : Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for performing a wide variety of graphic art and promotional materials. Plans, researches, and develops concepts for visual communications such as publications, print, displays, and electronic media. Working conditions are primarily inside an office environment. May exercise supervision over assigned staff.

Essential Job Functions

Collaborates with managers to review strategic direction and then conceptualizes and executes graphic design concepts that meet objectives.
Schedules, coordinates, and prioritizes the work of subordinates involved in the production of communications projects; provides esthetic and technical direction.
Plans, researches, develops, and executes concepts for a variety of projects requiring graphic arts, such as pamphlets, posters, brochures, and displays; may use conventional methods and photography.
Attends project-planning meetings with clients, team members, contractors, supervisors, and other professionals. During the design process, consults and discusses with the applicable members about materials, layout, specifications, and product.
Determines size and arrangement of illustrative material and copy; selects style and size of type; and arranges layout based upon available space, knowledge of layout principles, and esthetic design concepts; discusses illustration at various stages of completion and makes changes as necessary.
Prepares illustrations or rough sketches of material according to client or supervisor’s instructions.
Determines style, techniques, and medium best suited to produce desired effects and to conform with specific instructions.
Prepares series of drawings to illustrate sequence and timing of story developments.
Assembles final layouts for printer.
Determines project specification (i.e., size, type, paper weight, ink colors, folds, cuts, etc.) including costs and completion dates.
Maintains inventory of graphics supplies and equipment.
Produces designs into camera-ready artwork for printer or silk.
Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in working with projects of varied size and complexity in the areas of drafting and graphics.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Three (3) years relatable professional experience in a communications, marketing or public relations field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of marketing and promotional tools, strategies and techniques.
Experience in creating impactful graphics for digital, print, and other mediums (van wraps, building signage, etc.).
Demonstrated proficiency in varied writing styles including social media content, news releases, presentations, website content and standard business writing.
Ability to use social media analytical tools to collect and analyze data.
Knowledge of photography and videography techniques.
Knowledge of organic media and communication strategies and ability to assist in the creation of targeted, bilingual marketing campaigns.
Skill in use of personal computers and software including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva and social media analytics tools such as Sprout or Hootsuite.
Ability to work within tight deadlines and prioritize assigned projects.
Spanish speaking, reading, writing skills preferred.
Valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s License OR valid driver’s license from another state with the ability to obtain a valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s License within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Use of your own personal vehicle may at time be required and proof of Liability Insurance will be required.

Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
Ability to prepare and communicate accurate cost estimates of projects, both in-house and contracted.
Ability to prioritize projects assigned.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
Ability to exercise independent judgment and work with minimal supervision.
Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position.
