*Summary: *The Communications Director will work directly with Bionano’s Chief Executive Officer to develop dynamic internal and external communications to help create further understanding of the company’s purpose and vision. The Director will be largely responsible for leading special projects and for collaborating with marketing and PR in order to strengthen Bionano’s reputation through the media. The Director is an expert in media and public relations and will use their experience and knowledge to develop, maintain and manage our relationships across a range of media, from financial and health reporters to science journalists. This role will develop both proactive strategies to enhance Bionano’s corporate reputation with this audience while also managing news flow.
This role requires strong communications skills, personal credibility and integrity and business knowledge and acumen. There is a high level of issues management, and the role will likely routinely deal with sensitive information and often operates in pressurized circumstances.
*Primary Duties and Responsibilities: *
*Build and enhance relationships with external media outlets including financial, health and science journalist.

Monitor the health care media environment for opportunities to highlight Bionano’s work, including via the successful placement of stories about the company’s work.
Prepare company spokespeople for media interviews and other engagements, including conferences, as needed, and ensuring that company’s spokespeople are prepared to address issues as they emerge.
Identify external opportunities, including media interviews, speaking engagements at industry conferences, and other forums to showcase Bionano thought leadership.
Act as a lead spokesperson, particularly on highly sensitive issues that may affect the company’s reputation.
Provide strategic counsel and support to the Optical Genome Mapping business to amplify external communication plans while ensuring opportunities align with company goals and objectives.
Produce and deliver proactive strategies around news flow.
Anticipate issues where possible and produce issues management materials for key corporate issues.
Work closely with digital communications colleagues to maximize digital reach of announcements.

Skills & Education:

Bachelor’s degree required; MBA degree strongly preferred.
8+ years of public relations experience in a life-science related communications field.
Media experience.
Proven experience of working in a fast-paced global and matrix team.
Experience in corporate communications, journalism, public health communications and/or in a life science company/pharmaceutical company, Government agency, or at a public relations firm working with biotech/pharmaceutical clients.
Strong understanding of scientific concepts and ability to translate technical language comprehensive terms.
Ability to collaborate, facilitate, influence, and organize across multiple groups and levels of an organization.
Ability to understand and synthesize industry content in a meaningful and impactful manner.
Exceptional judgement and calmness under pressure.
Outstanding attention to detail.
