The Probation Department is seeking staff with a passion for inspiring positive behavioral changes in our

youth!

Orientation will be held on the first Wednesday of each month beginning April 6, 2022.

Job offers for selected candidates will be made shortly after orientation. Candidates should be prepared to immediately complete background paperwork, upon receipt of a job offer.

The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below. Please note that dates are approximate and are dependent upon the successful completion of each step of the process.

Job Offer and Background Process begins: Shortly after the orientation.
Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.

Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of background and medical screening.

Correctional Deputy Probation Officer I

The Correctional Deputy Probation Officer I is the entry-level paraprofessional class of the series. This position is located to the Institutional Services division of the Youth Development & Community Support Services (YDCSS) branch of the San Diego County Probation Department.

The YDCSS branch of the Probation Department is undergoing a significant transformation as the local juvenile justice system embraces a positive youth development framework of supporting young people and their families. Probation is embracing a trauma-informed, equitable approach to helping our residents. Under direct supervision, incumbents perform duties via short-term basic programming with an emphasis on coaching and best practices for interacting with youth in a temporary short-term detention or a treatment-oriented milieu for youth in both short-term and long-term custody. As a diversely populated workforce, the Probation Department is committed to providing opportunities in varying fields of rehabilitation, investigations and supervision of youth.

Correctional Deputy Probation Officers I work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with the primary responsibility of maintaining a safe and secure environment while providing rehabilitation counseling, promoting healthy relationships and positive engagement of youth in the custody of YDCSS.

Positions in this class are Peace Officers as defined in Section 830 of the California Penal Code.

In this position you will:

Provide direct supervision, support and positive engagement to youth in the department’s care and custody
Engage and support youth in educational and recreational activities, living, dining and work assignment activities
Write, document and enter incidents/reports
Coordinate the transportation of youth to court and other external visits

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possess a U.S. High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
Must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment
Must have a valid California Class C driver’s license at the time of appointment, or the ability to arrange necessary and timely transportation for field travel
Must be a U.S. citizen or in the process of becoming a U.S. citizen

Qualified applicants must meet the minimum standards for California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) as stated in Government Code Sections 1029 and 1031.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
Employees hired on or after October 15, 2021, are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before beginning employment. If you receive a conditional offer of employment, a copy of your vaccination card must be provided at the time of background.

Current County employees hired on or before October 14, 2021, are required to provide a copy of their vaccine card showing they are fully vaccinated, or undergo Covid-19 diagnostic testing and wear a facemask in the workplace.

Employees who work at County locations subject to the California Department of Public Health State Public Health Officer order are required to be fully vaccinated. In addition, booster-eligible employees must receive their booster by March 1, 2022, or within 15 days of becoming eligible for a booster if they are not eligible as of March 1, 2022. If there are CDPH date changes for Booster compliance, employees must come into compliance in accordance with that date.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Experience working in a youth treatment program (i.e. group homes, residential facilities, juvenile correction, behavioral health rehabilitation facilities) or community-based therapeutic programs which included casework, individual and/or group counseling, juvenile rehabilitation, probation and parole, or social work for youth (12-21 years of age)

BACKGROUND QUALIFICATIONS

Must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness
Felony convictions will be disqualifying
Misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency
Prior to appointment, candidates will be subject to a thorough background investigation which may include a psychological, truth verification or other examination or test
Must be found by a licensed physician to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental conditions which might adversely affect exercising the power of a peace officer

WORKING CONDITIONS

May be required to work a variety of shifts (some lasting seven days), which may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays
May be required to work a schedule that includes twelve (12) hour shifts
May be assigned to correctional institutions located in remote areas
May be exposed to an environment of hostile, or aggressive behavior

EVALUATION PROCESS

Qualified applicants will be placed on a
six
(6) month employment list based on successful completion of the written exam, meeting the minimum qualifications and scores received from the supplemental questionnaire.
