Position Purpose
Lead and implement the tactical and strategic planning process for the Exhibit Department. Understand and constantly seek to refine knowledge of best practices in exhibitory and interpretation at other benchmark institutions. Supervise directly, or indirectly, all staff responsible for permanent and seasonal exhibits and programs. Collaborate with the Visitor Experience and Community Engagement (VECE) team to plan initiatives, create new exhibits, renovate existing exhibits, and improve infrastructure.
The Director of Exhibits is a member of the Garden’s senior management team, which collaboratively leads all aspects of the Garden’s operations, planning, and budgeting. Therefore, while primarily responsible for the leadership of Exhibits, the Director must also develop a strategic understanding of all aspects of the Garden’s mission and operation, and work seamlessly with the senior leadership team in managing the overall operation of the Garden.

Essential Duties

Supervise, mentor, coach, and evaluate key staff members responsible for exhibit design, development, implementation, and maintenance.
In collaboration with Visitor Experience and Community Engagement Team leaders, develop and manage strategies for planning related to new and existing exhibits and programming.
Assemble interdepartmental teams to develop exhibit and project proposals. Identify major interrelated issues critical to the Garden’s identity and purpose (i.e. history, horticulture, design, education, conservation, research, organizational culture, audience).
Oversee the quality and upkeep of Garden exhibits and displays, including interpretive signs and labels, way finding signs, and exhibit collateral.
Lead seasonal and temporary exhibition development and implementation, including seasonal displays for events.
Develop, manage, and achieve the annual planning and exhibit budget.
Serve as an ambassador for the Garden and all of its programs, and regularly attend community events to authentically engage with our core audiences and, particularly, with the three audiences identified as priorities in the current strategic plan—Latinx, millennials, and children and their families.
. Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, design, or related field
Five years’ experience in project management, strategic planning, and/or exhibit development
Strong leadership and analytic skills, organizational ability, written and oral communication skills; high level of personal motivation, creativity, and decisiveness
At least one year of supervisory experience
Familiarity with national trends in exhibit development
Proficiency with Word, Excel, and Outlook
Computer competency in graphic programs including Adobe and Quark
Superior analytical and research skills; the ability to make decisions and manage course corrections as necessary are required
Superior time management, attention to detail, and follow-up skills are a must
Patience, tact, and the ability to build rapport throughout the organization; high emotional intelligence and the art of persuasion required
Ability to work off-hours with occasional evenings, weekends, and/or holidays

Typical office equipment.
Scope of Authority
Review, negotiate, sign, and enforce contracts under direction of the Senior Director.
Financial Authority
Responsible for managing the departmental budget.
Internal Communication
Frequent interaction with all Garden employees.
External Communication
Frequent communication with vendors and artists.
Working Conditions
Some physical effort beyond what’s typically required in a normal office environment. Potential for tight deadlines or time periods of high workload may require additional hours. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.
Must be able to walk, sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, see, hear, speak, read, and type. Manual dexterity and the ability to lift up to 25 pounds required. Some outside work may be required.
