Position Description
I. About Houston Arts AllianceHouston Arts Alliance (HAA) is a local arts and culture nonprofit whose principal work is to implement the
City of Houston’s vision, values, and goals for its arts grantmaking and civic art investments. HAA’s work is conducted through contracts with the City of Houston, overseen by the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs.
HAA also executes privately funded special projects to meet the needs of the arts community, such as disaster preparation, research on the state of the arts in Houston, and temporary public art projects that energize neighborhoods.
In short, HAA helps artists and nonprofits be bold, productive, and strong.
HAA values and prioritizes diverse perspectives that create better solutions and service for the people we serve, including diversity in age, self-identities, and all other domains. II. Position OverviewThe Director of Communications is responsible for strategy, copy, and org-wide work streams related to social channels, broadcast emails, press releases, web content, grants and public art competitions, and other communiques. The Director shares HAA’s values: equity, fairness, transparency, and responsiveness to community. The position is primarily responsible for quality of communications, the overall communications program, and the processes used – partnering with subject matter experts in all divisions
– to publish each item. Paramount importance is given to providing transparency about our services to the arts community, communicating why decisions are made, and creating optimally user-friendly communiques. The Director will play a role, as do all HAA team members, contributing to greater racial equity and other equities through how and where we communicate, with a focus on the humans impacted by our work and the integrity of the systems that serve the arts community. It is expected the position will hire and manage a Social Community staff member.
III. Responsibilities
Create, Maintain and Improve Communications Workflows

Partner with subject matter experts (SME) from each division to create processes that result in desired communications frequency, quality, and content.
Document workflows for sharing and stability.
Refine and improve workflows as needed for efficiency or quality output.

Write, Edit, and Publish

Envision and implement a consistent, clear, and positive voice, tone, and feel in all communications.
Develop processes that each division can use to create communications.
Identify and ideate new processes, outreach opportunities, and online ad buys with SME to garner new audiences and reach
Edit SME content for clarity, readability, transparency, explanations of why, and reader-friendly organization and language.
Develop original content for social and other communications mechanisms as needed.
Implement sustainable multi-lingual strategies that serve the arts community of Houston.
Routinely write and revise press releases
Create a library of boilerplate content for SME to create efficiency and eliminate duplication of work.

Strategize

Ensure SME use of the organization’s communications calendar and other tools to provide measurements of quality, engagement, and reach.
Report regularly to the CEO and Communications Committee of the Board of Directors on impact and success, as well as directions for improvement.
Leverage expertise and partner with SME to improve marketing of grants, civic art, disaster resilience, and fundraising opportunities.
Leverage social media analytics to determine the effectiveness of certain types of posts or formats.
Analyze key performance indicators from Likes, Comments, and Shares on various platforms.

Create and Leverage Positive Relationships

Create positive, productive relationships throughout the organization to ensure consistent, constant achievement of quality, on-time communications inclusive of all mechanisms and messages.
Prioritize projects, deadlines, and tasks for organization team members in alignment with organizational goals for communications.
Staff the Communications Committee of the Board to provide transparency, create engagement, and solicit and implement input.
Oversee and build a skilled Communications function for the organization.
