Job Description : Job Summary: Directly manages all functions of the Lab+ Department, including all aspects from initial budgeting of contract research to the completion of project deliverables. This position will supervise all Research Scientists (all levels) and the Lab+ Operations Manager. Essential Responsibilities:

The primary function of this position is to manage all activities of scientific personnel (Research Scientists, Senior Scientists, Principal Scientists, and Lab+ Operations Manager) to ensure departmental goals for profitability, quality, and timeliness are met and exceeded.
Consult with the Chief Science Officer to assign all projects to a specific individual for completion. Conducts necessary follow-up to ensure that the Lab+ operations team has completed required planning sessions for all major projects with the assigned project leader.
Ensures that all steps for the conduct of research/projects are followed. These steps briefly include: proposals being submitted by the established deadline, projects being entered into the contract research tracking software, research being completed within the timelines established for each project, reports being submitted to the customer by the established deadline, final documentation being filed, and projects being billed on time.
Serves the main reviewer of all proposals and final reports. Provides feedback directly to the research team.
Provides professional development of all scientific personnel and works to continually expand departmental knowledge base by directing technical training of current scientific personnel to fill identified gaps in expertise.
Maintains an expert level of technical competence in the field of food microbiology by reading scientific journals, attending professional workshops, and being aware of food industry regulations, issues, and trends. Travels to attend scientific meetings (IAFP) and industry trade shows to stay abreast of current scientific, industry, and regulatory trends and to interact with clientele.
Has complete understanding of the contract research process of preparing and/or approving reports, preparing budgets, coordinating execution, and preparing billing in order to provide effective management of and delegation to scientific personnel. Also spends a portion of time performing these functions for large national accounts and for other contract research services that pose a technical or scientific challenge to ensure successful completion.
Assumes the highest level of responsibility in providing technical guidance for all levels of the company outside of the SVP of Technical Services and Chief Science Officer by sharing in TechAid duties, participating in programs such as the Technical Manager training sessions, and participating in monthly technical webinars.
Responds to customer needs in both routine laboratory services and contract research services.
Works directly with vendors to ensure all technologies that are used or to be used are properly supported to include installation, maintenance agreements, training of lab personnel, and removal upon completions of studies.
Reviews standard operating procedures that are authored by scientific personnel for routine laboratory testing procedures and non-routine specialized testing.
Prepares technical writing pieces for periodicals and newsletters.

Supervision: ? Reports to and takes direction from Chief Science Officer with implementing departmental missions and goals. ? Manges all activities of scientific personnel (Research Scientists, Senior Scientists, and Principal Scientists) to ensure departmental goals for profitability, quality, and timeliness are met and exceeded. ? Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws to include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
