POSITION TITLE: EM Facility Lab Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY:
The EM Facility Lab Assistant will support the Electron Microscopy department at Scripps by assisting support staff in the maintenance and oversight of the electron microscopes and ancillary equipment.

RESPONSIBLITIES AND DUTIES:

Opening in-house maintenance calls for facility issues. This can range from carpet cleaning and having light bulbs changed to air conditioning and heating problems.
Repair of instrumentation that is not covered by a service contract such as vacuum stations, glow discharge units, carbon evaporators, cryogenic devices, etc.
Oversee troubleshooting and maintenance of Electron Microscopes and related ancillary equipment.
Being the single point of contact for outside vendors.
Ensuring vendors honor service contracts.
Develop written, standard operating protocols for use of the instrumentation.
Eventually become responsible for training of new electron microscope users.

REQUIREMENTS:

High school diploma or GED.
Good people skills and a great deal of patience.
A strong electrical, mechanical, software, and physics background is preferred.
Experience with diagnosing and repair of complex; vacuum systems, precision stages, high voltage supplies, electron sources, electron optics, digital imaging and processing is preferred.
Teaching and technical writing experience is preferred.
Experience in electron microscopy is useful, but not required.

PHYSICAL REQUIRMENTS:

Details of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process.

This position works in a laboratory environment.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 45 lbs.
Perform motions requiring fine dexterity.
Exposure to cold and/or hot temperatures.
Stationary position for an extended period of time.
Ability to traverse campus/facility as needed.
Must be able to operate machinery as needed.

COMPENSATION
: $22.63-$28.29 per hour
