? Job Purpose
To provide professional leadership and management for the English department in order to secure high quality teaching, effective use of resources and improved standards of learning and achievement for all students.
? Major Areas of Responsibility
Strategic direction and development of the departmentTeaching and learning
? Key Tasks
Use data effectively to identify students who are underachieving in English; create and implement plans of action to support those students-
Coordinate result analysis and related discussions. Keep records/minutes of the same. Also keep monthly records of underachievers ,high performers and create action plans. Meet with specific teachers every week to ensure implementation of the action plan.
Ensure curriculum coverage, continuity and progression in English for all students including those of high ability and those with special educational needs
Use department meetings to keep weekly records of curriculum progression. Also ensure similar pace in curriculum coverage in each stream. Coordinate and check weekly plans.
Hold regular Department meetings with minutes and agendasLead teaching and learning improvements across the department.
Encourage sharing of good practices among department colleagues. Make efforts to build a system of one colleague sharing a high point of the week in every department meeting. Also encourage sharing of strategies that failed and succeeded through e-mails. Keep in regular contact with Group coordinator to be aware of any pedagogical learning opportunities for department teachers.
Identify and adopt the most effective teaching and learning strategies for pupils studying English and share these appropriately.
To most definitely ensure that resource folders on the server are updated regularly.
Ensure that Schemes of Learning reflect current educational philosophy.Keep up to date with local and national initiatives and subject knowledge.
Encourage all teacher of the department to be regular visitors on the OCC, CIE websites. Also be personally aware of new publications and share them with colleagues and work with group coordinator to place orders or subscribe to educational websites.
Ensure that strategies are in place to support the learning of all students including able, gifted and talented and those with special educational needs.Provide professional learning opportunities through departmental meeting and inset time.Support the team to develop strategies for behavior management.Plan, prepare and conduct/implement IA’s and other assessment techniques.Collation of subject/group documents to be handed over to the Language Coordinator
Note: For the points which are not mentioned they are self- explanatory and direct. Senior teacher will send the group Coordinator records of every department meeting, formal/informal, scheduled or otherwise. Senior Teacher will also meet the group Coordinator regularly and send him/her documents outlining decisions taken after he/she too has approved of them. Senior teacher will also gather whatever information, data, IA documents the Coordinator requires and facilitate their smooth functioning.
