EQUIPMENT OPERATOR – Wastewater Option

The County of San Diego is accepting applications for Equipment Operator, Wastewater Option. Employees in this job class maintain and clean sewer lines, and operate a variety of sewer cleaning equipment. For additional information on the Equipment Operator job class, please click here.

Department of Public Works – Selection interview Dates

Interviews will take place on a date(s) in early May 2022. Candidates should be prepared to immediately complete background paperwork, upon receipt of a job offer.

The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below. Please note that dates are approximate and are dependent upon the successful completion of each step of the process.

Job Offer and Background Process begins in May 2022, exact date to be determined,

Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.

Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of background or other mutually agreed upon date.

Minimum Qualifications:

Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and cleaning of sewer lines which includes the operation of sewer cleaning equipment including rodders, jet rodders and combination trucks, backhoes and skiploaders.

NOTE: Stormwater experience is considered qualifying.

The wastewater management section is seeking a candidate who possesses a strong work ethic, demonstrates integrity and most importantly, strives to provide an individual commitment to our team goals and efforts.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

Employees hired on or after October 15, 2021, are required to be fully vaccinated* against COVID-19 before beginning employment. If you receive a conditional offer of employment, a copy of your vaccination card must be provided at the time of background.

Current County employees hired on or before October 14, 2021, are required to provide a copy of their vaccine card showing they are fully vaccinated, or undergo Covid-19 diagnostic testing and wear a facemask in the workplace.

Employees who work at County locations subject to the California Department of Public Health State Public Health Officer order are required to be fully vaccinated by the following dates:

Health and congregate care settings – September 30, 2021
Medical areas of jails/correctional facilities – October 14, 2021

License Requirements:

Possession of a valid California Class B license with a tank endorsement and without transmission or air brake restrictions is required at the time of appointment. A valid California Class A license with a tank endorsement and without transmission or air brake restrictions must be obtained by the end of the probationary period and must be maintained throughout employment for positions allocated to Wastewater Option.

Working Conditions:

Equipment Operators work on sewer lines without protection from the weather, and are subject to traffic, dust, and noise. Work schedules may require working multiple shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays due to the department’s response to inclement weather conditions and/or emergencies.

Evaluation

Qualified applicants will be placed on a
nine (9)
month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment and supplemental applications.
