Job Description : The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston is one of the world’s most respected centers focused on cancer patient care, research, education and prevention. It is one of the nation’s original three comprehensive cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Institute.

The Gift Shop associate is responsible for providing excellent customer service that ensures customer satisfaction and increases the sales volume in the gift shops. The Gift Shop associate assists customers in choosing the right product by recommending, describing and demonstrating products. They provide effective and creative solutions to gift shop customers in person and by phone. The Gift Shop associate keeps the shelves stocked, arrange product displays, ring up sales, and verify product inventory, among many other duties as assigned. They also use cash registers to ring up transactions, which involves using barcode scanners and credit card machines. The Gift Shop associate interacts daily with patients, caregivers, employees, fellow team members, store supervisors, and financial staff.

The Gift Shop associate needs an intense and competitive spirit, an assertive and confident personality, a strong sense of urgency and a commitment to achieving results. The Gift Shop associate should possess good communication skills, as well as proficiency in basic math and technology. They must be courteous and efficient and maintain a professional appearance.

Customer service

Maintain a professional and friendly environment for all customers and fellow associates

Maintain a superior level of customer service

Understand individual customer needs

Successfully assist customers in the purchase of gift shop merchandise

Respond in a timely manner to customer inquiries, needs and problems

Represent the Gift Shop at special MD Anderson events, and interact within our patient population

Point of sale system

Properly and accurately process sales within the POS system

Achieve or exceed all individual monthly sales goals/targets

Perform cash verification/reconciliation and institutional money-handling requirements

Retail

Perform opening and closing activities as well as the housekeeping and inventory needs of the Gift Shop store

Keep the shelves stocked

Arrange product displays

Verify product inventory

Participate in physical store inventory

Other retail duties, as assigned by supervisor

Education

Required: High school graduate or equivalent.

Experience

Required: One year of warehouse or retail operation experience.
