DESCRIPTION
UC San Diego’s Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) is responsible for increasing the post-secondary eligibility of educationally/socio-economically disadvantaged students in San Diego and Imperial Counties, including increasing levels of eligibility and competitive eligibility of program participants. Historically, EAOP has been primarily tasked with disseminating information concerning college entrance requirements, providing motivational activities, as well as with identifying and tracking middle school/high school students demonstrating potential for college admittance. More recently, the mission of EAOP was altered to include a provision of in-depth academic enrichment or developmental education activities across a broad spectrum of disciplines.
Under direction of higher-level K-14 Academic Preparation Specialist, works with assigned institutions and organizations to implement academic preparation programming of moderate scope. Maintains program visibility in schools. Maintains collaborative relationships with K-14 institutions and / or community entities. Maintains relationships with higher education institutions. This position works on a daily basis in the SouthBay Area and serves 4 high schools and hosts several large scale bilingual conferences for the Spanish speaking community. Written and oral proficiency in Spanish is required as this position serves a primarily Spanish-speaking population. Occasional weekends and evenings are required to participate in school and community events.
Occasional overtime may be required including evenings and/or weekends, as workload demands. Vacations must be scheduled during off-peak periods.

This position is assigned to work weekly at the following high school sites.

Castle Park, Chula Vista, San Ysidro, and Southwest.

Please note these schools are part of Sweetwater Union High School District and operate on a year-round academic calendar.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience advising and supporting educationally disadvantaged and academically at-risk students regarding postsecondary opportunities and careers. Experience implementing academic preparation programs.
Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Knowledge and experience working with a diverse student population, and sensitivity to culture, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status.
Knowledge and understanding of K-14 education.
Knowledge of higher education institutions (UC, CSU, CC, etc.), admissions and financial aid requirements, and the ability to interpret policies and procedures to youth, parents, and school representatives. Knowledge of UC A-G requirements, admissions eligibility criteria, and competitive eligibility.
Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with school district administrators, school counselors, principals, teachers, and community contacts. Skills to identify existing and potential programmatic partnerships and cultivate/establish collaborative relationships with internal and external constituencies, particularly through community service and service learning programs.
Thorough knowledge of high school graduation and college entrance requirements.
Highly effective interpersonal, group, and cross-cultural communication skills. Skill in public speaking and presentations. Ability to lead and facilitate effective group and team-building activities.
Demonstrated individual/group counseling/advising, leadership and supervisory skills.
Proven experience and ability in developing and implementing student leadership and engagement activities in a university setting, and in developing and implementing campus-based networks that include students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels
Thorough knowledge of organizational development, group dynamics, strategies for change and Principles of Community.
Thorough knowledge of diverse issues related to leadership. Skill in leading, and promoting leadership within, diverse populations, particularly students.
Demonstrated skill in budget preparation, reporting and management.
Ability to develop collaborative working relationships with student organizations, college staffs, academic departments, and other campus entities to ensure effective services for students.
Ability to interpret and apply University of California and UC San Diego policies and procedures.
Ability to author clear and concise reports and memos.
Expertise with computer software applications including, but not limited to, MS Office Suite and MS Outlook, and internet web applications. Willingness and commitment to regularly maintain and update technology skills as required. Skill in development of website content.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Must pass school district Background Check.
Must sign CANRA form as a CA Mandated Reporter.
