Job Summary:
The Medical Reference Librarian serves as the library liaison to the School of Medicine. Provides research assistance to library users by facilitating access to information resources through information literacy instruction, collection development, and various outreach activities. Conducts assessment activities focused on patron experience with the library – whether it be in person or virtual.
Duties & Essential Job Functions:
1. Provides reference and expert searching services to support medical education and clinical practice. Assists TCU School of Medicine library users in finding books and journals, answers factual questions, and helps define research topics in-person or by responding to email or chat requests.
2. Develops and provides course-integrated and other library instruction. Provides library orientation and tours. Develops online tutorials and other electronic teaching materials. Prepares and teaches use of online medical resources such as the library catalog, indexes, and databases by conducting hands-on classes and individual instruction and developing and maintaining online instructional materials related to medical research techniques.
3. Contributes to curriculum and course development, training, and workshops for TCU School of Medicine students, faculty, and staff. Cultivates partnerships and collaborates with faculty on projects including teaching, grants, manuscripts, paper, or poster presentations.
4. Provides research support such as scheduled consultations, on-demand research help, and classroom instruction both in-person and virtual. Assists patrons with research and information management tools and skills through individual and small group consultations.
5. Participates in building the library’s collections by collaborating with School of Medicine faculty to identify books, journals, video material and electronic resources necessary to support the needs of the students and faculty. This includes evaluating databases, as well as selecting items for addition or withdrawal from the collection.
6. Develops a full network of contacts within assigned liaison areas; anticipates and meets their information needs. Partners with other librarians to develop and market library services to assigned liaison groups.
7. Contributes to the overall operation of the library serving on committees and task forces as assigned.
8. Functions as an effective, proactive liaison to the faculty and students of the TCU School of Medicine by expanding and promoting the information literacy component of the various programs and classes.
9. Maintains staff confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
10. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; and establishing personal networks.
11. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Education & Experience
:
Masters’ of Library Science (ALA accredited)
0-1 years professional library experience
Preferred Education & Experience:
Second graduate degree
Second language skills
Medical library reference experience
Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:
None
Preferred Licensure, Certification, and/or Specialized Training:
None
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of academic library print and electronic resources.
Knowledge of major medical and health sciences databases used in academic libraries and ability to use them effectively.
Ability to listen to and analyze library users’ requests and determine best sources for finding the information.
Skill in the use of Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel and Outlook.
Ability to communicate well with both faculty and students.
Ability to plan and deliver research/instruction services to School of Medicine students and faculty.
Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):
Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs.
Work Environment:
Work is indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
This role is an on campus, in-person position.
