Who are we?
Mission Edge is a social enterprise located in Liberty Station in San Diego. While we are formally incorporated as a 501c3 nonprofit organization, we operate like a mission-driven for- profit business. We believe that to sustain real, good impact, the social sector must be supported by earned revenue. We talk that talk and walk that walk by teaching earned revenue to early-stage social entrepreneurs through our Impact Lab programs and by earning our own revenue from outsourced Accounting and HR. We are genuine do-gooders with real business savvy determined to make the social sector more sustainable.
The Role
Mission Edge is growing rapidly, and we are seeking to add an outgoing and wicked smart Small Business CFO Consultant to our team! The CFO consultant will be responsible for working with the small businesses enrolled in our three small business accelerator programs; SAIL (social impact accelerator), Compass (small business pivot accelerator), and Seed the Future (small business accelerator for founders of color.) This role is instrumental to the growth of Mission Edge’s position in the greater San Diego entrepreneurial ecosystem. This person will get to work with local entrepreneurs and help drive social innovation in our community!

What will you be doing?
You will be helping small businesses be successful by helping them truly understand their financial position. You will work with them one on one to determine product profit margins, scalable hiring plans, and an actionable financial plan for their business. These engagements will be relatively short (1 month to 6 months) but highly impactful. So…how are you going to do this? You are going to:

Meet with small business owners one on one both in person and virtually.
Ask lots of questions to determine where they are but also where they want to go
Dive into their financials and give them candid feedback on what is working and what needs some help.
Develop simple short and long-term financial forecasts that the business owner can maintain for years to come without the need of a financial pro like yourself.
Be a great listener and trusted partner

What is Compass? Compass is a 3-month programs that helps San Diego small businesses understand their costs, expenses, and profitability so they can start paying themselves sustainably and grow their business.
What is Seed the Future? Seed the Future is a 6-month program where founders of color receive targeted coaching to develop solid financial management habits and deploy $10K investment capital to increase sales and revenue.
What is SAIL? SAIL is a 3-month program that helps early-stage social enterprise founders learn how to validate their ideas, so they can start earning revenue in alignment with their mission.

What you need to be successful in this role?

Legit hands on CFO experience, not from the ivory tower, but solid experience that will be helpful to small businesses
Solid communication skills whereby you can communicate financial info to non-financial folks
Wizard like Excel skills to create simple and usable financial projections
Mad juggling skills to balance the needs of multiple small businesses at once

Job status and availability
This is a part-time, non-exempt position. Hours will vary based on which accelerators are active but is expected to be approximately 10 to 40 hours per month. The hours will take place during weekdays, but the times will be flexible (mix of day and evening) depending on the availability of the small business owners.
The position will be hybrid to include both onsite (our office is super fun and located in Liberty Station) and virtual (zoom anyone?). Due to the local nature of the work, this person must reside in the San Diego area. Remote candidates will not be considered.
