Position : Police Assistant *Special Detail
Job Description : Police Assistants *Special Detail filling this temporary position will be required to successfully complete the MCSO Detention Officer’s Academy or equivalent at the first available opportunity. Upon graduating the Detention Officer’s Academy, applicants will be required to complete Phoenix Police firearms training and qualifications. The duties of this temporary position will include taking custody of prisoners from arresting officers; processing prisoners into the City’s booking facility; searching prisoners and securing prisoner’s personal property; fingerprinting and taking mug shots; completing required documentation and forms; operating computers to obtain warrant and record information; maintaining jail facilities and equipment; safely transporting prisoners when necessary; and working in cooperation with Maricopa County Sheriff”s Office personnel at the county jail. This Special Detail will carry a firearm as part of their uniform and will be required to maintain firearms proficiency throughout their career.
Work Location: Most work is performed in a holding facility or in vehicles while transporting prisoners, with occasional work performed in an office environment. A Police Assistant *Special Detail must be able to react quickly and effectively to physical confrontations and emergency situations and may be required to use enough legal force to restrain violent/combative prisoners.
The work environment and physical demands may require the following: performing physical tasks; bending, reaching, kneeling, and crouching; standing and sitting for long periods of time; performing defensive tactics which require quick reflexes, agility, coordination and strength; moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds; occasionally moving heavier objects and materials (100 pounds or greater); working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings; and working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
Some positons may be temporary with benefits but will not earn city retirement credits or participate financially into the city’s retirement program. If the successful candidate is a current City employee, all benefits will still be applicable, and the employee will still contribute to their pension. Temporary positions are not covered under civil service rules, and thus employment is considered “at-will” and employees may be separated at any time.
This recruitment and any interview process as a result of this recruitment may be used by multiple hiring managers and multiple departments throughout the City to fill any related current or future vacancies; other recruitments and appropriate eligible lists may also be considered.
SALARY
Police Assistant
$17.11 (minimum) – $24.92 (maximum) hourly / $35,588.80 – $51,833.60 annually.
Police Assistant *Special Detail
$17.97 (minimum) – $26.08 (maximum) hourly / $37,378.00 – $54,246.00 annually.
BENEFITS

Pension Information
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Two years of public contact or customer assistance experience.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

The City of Phoenix has paused plans to implement a federal mandate requiring all city employees be vaccinated against COVID-19. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
Fluent in Spanish.
Prior Detention Officer experience.
Experience working with CLIPS, RMS, and Pre-booking.
