PROGRAM COORDINATOR –
Public Works Transportation Option
Working Title: DPW Fleet Manager
The County of San Diego is currently accepting job applications for Program Coordinator – Public Works Transportation Option (Working title – DPW Fleet Manager). The purpose of this recruitment is to fill an immediate vacancy in the Department of Public Works – Roads Fund, Transportation Division.
The selected candidate for this position will serve as “DPW Fleet Manager.” The future incumbent will be responsible for acquisition, disposal, and operational support of a diverse fleet with approximately 500 units. The fleet includes vehicles in Classes 1 (SUVs and Pickups) through 8 (tractors and straight trucks), equipment and implement trailers, off-road construction equipment, aircraft firefighting equipment, and road and sewer system maintenance equipment.
Key duties for this position:
Manages budget and spending for six Internal Service Funds, with a total of approximately $40 million in assets;
Develops and executes an annual acquisition budget of approximately $6 million;
Coordinates with the County’s Department of General Services, Fleet Management Division for maintenance and repair of the fleet;
Maintains a rate system to facilitate budgeting and distribution of equipment operational costs among the department’s vehicle users;
Monitors compliance with existing and proposed laws, rules, and regulations impacting fleet operations, and advises management on current and potential financial and operational impacts.
Plans and implements the Fleet’s sustainability plan to reduce greenhouse gases and encourage use of electrified vehicles.
Department of Public Works – Selection interview Dates
Interviews will take place on April 20 or 21, 2022. Candidates should be prepared to immediately complete background paperwork, upon receipt of a job offer.
The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below. Please note that dates are approximate and are dependent upon the successful completion of each step of the process.
Job Offer and Background Process begins on or around the latter part of April 2022, exact date to be determined,
Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of background or other mutually agreed upon date.
Minimum Qualifications
Qualified applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or certified foreign studies equivalency, AND, four (4) years of professional experience performing analysis, budget management, program administration, engineering, or closely related work in a program performing planning and analysis; OR a combination of education and/or experience as stated above.
NOTE: If attempting to qualify via college education, applicants must submit copies of their diploma, complete official or unofficial transcripts, letter of verification, or foreign studies equivalency certificate (if college education was obtained outside of the US) during Step 1 of the application submittal process.

Desired Experience – DPW Fleet Manager
Prior management level work experience overseeing and delivering an efficient and effective government or private fleet operation, where a significant quantity of vehicles are operated.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
Employees hired on or after October 15, 2021, are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before beginning employment. If you receive a conditional offer of employment, a copy of your vaccination card must be provided at the time of background.
Current County employees hired on or before October 14, 2021, are required to provide a copy of their vaccine card showing they are fully vaccinated, or undergo Covid-19 diagnostic testing and wear a facemask in the workplace.
Employees who work at County locations subject to the California Department of Public Health State Public Health Officer order are required to be fully vaccinated. In addition, booster-eligible employees must receive their booster by March 1, 2022, or within 15 days of becoming eligible for a booster if they are not eligible as of March 1, 2022. If there are CDPH date changes for Booster compliance, employees must come into compliance in accordance with that date.
Evaluation:
The names of qualified applicants will be placed on a
six (6) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained on their employment and supplemental applications.
