About the Position Are you a passionate animal advocate who wants to nurture the animals in our care? As one of the largest animal shelters in the Nation, we need your support to make a difference!
We want you to be our next diligent Shelter Associate to provide daily care for our animals. You’ll be a supporter of the animals in our care, promoting the health, safety, and welfare of the people and pets of Maricopa County.

Position Qualifications

Education

High school diploma or GED

Experience

Six months working or volunteer experience with domestic animals in a veterinary hospital, animal control, humane society, or another animal facility
Six months of in-person customer service work experience
NOTE: Any applicable volunteer or work experience should be listed under the work experience section of the application to include hours worked and job duties; information listed on the resume or other section of the application will not be considered

OR

Completion of a Veterinary Certification or a minimum of 15 completed semester hours of post-secondary education in Animal Health, Animal Science, Zoology, or related animal sciences may substitute for the experience requirement.

Essential Job Tasks

The tasks listed are a representation and not an all-inclusive list of essential job tasks for this position.

Follows established disease control protocols to clean, disinfect, and maintain shelter apartments, kennels, cages, equipment, walkways, general areas, and other job-related items daily
Ensures adequate food and water is given to shelter animals daily
Receives animals into the shelter, making sure the animal is scanned for identification, information is entered into the database accurately, and an identifying photograph is taken
Cultivates positive client, volunteer, and coworker relations through professional, courteous, and educational interactions
Provides quality customer service to clients, volunteers, and staff while actively promoting our mission, services, programs, and events
Ensures all shelter animals are properly housed and cared for within the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare guidelines and that positive reinforcement training methods are employed
Participates in stress and disease reduction efforts through purposeful and compassionate low-stress handling and placement of animals
Creates and maintains necessary animal records, perform data entry
Assists clients with the animal adoption process; facilitates client and animal interactions to ensure a safe and pleasant experience

Working Conditions
You will regularly be required to stand, walk on all types of surfaces, sometimes slippery or uneven and rough. You must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform duties that require lifting, bending, and stooping. Environmental factors can be indoors or outdoors, working in the extreme heat of the Arizona summers. You will frequently be exposed to dogs and cats with unknown temperaments or behavior.

Selection Procedure

Life and Disability Insurance Because life sometimes takes unexpected turns, the County offers life insurance coverage to help employees and their loved ones in the event of death. Basic life and basic accidental death & dismemberment insurance equivalent to one times an employee’s annual base salary is provided at no cost, with the option for employees to purchase additional coverage including spouse and child life insurance. Disability insurance is available to replace a portion of an employee’s salary should they experience a short-term illness or injury. Retirement Eligible employees are covered by one of several State-sponsored retirement pension plans, including the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) and the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS). Additionally, there’s the option to contribute to a 457(b) Savings Plan that provides employees with a variety of investment opportunities. For those employees who retire from the County and from their retirement system, and have accrued 1,000 or more hours of sick leave, the County makes a $10,000 contribution to a Post-Employment Health Plan set up on their behalf to be used for payment of eligible out-of-pocket healthcare expenses. Group Legal Plan Maricopa County offers employees group discounts to purchase coverage for legal services such as adoptions, family matters, wills and trusts. Wellness Maricopa County’s Wellness Works program promotes health and wellness for employees and their families by focusing on physical activity, good nutrition, self-care and stress management. Maricopa County offers eligible employees a wellness incentive for completing required activities. By meeting a set of criteria, employees and their families can get reimbursed for participating in a Weight Watchers Program. On-site fitness facilities and fitness classes are provided to employees at various locations around the County. Employees and their families also have the opportunity to receive a discounted fitness club membership at LA Fitness. Employees have access to smoking cessation programs and health-related classes on various topics including nutrition, exercise and stress management. Employees located downtown benefit from an onsite pharmacy and clinic. Every fall, flu vaccines are offered to employees at various County locations. Employee Assistance Program (EAP) When employees and their families are faced with personal issues, confidential, short-term counseling and referral services are available to them at no cost. Employee Discounts Maricopa County subscribes to a service association which provides employees with volume discounts for sporting events, entertainment, and many other services. Commute Options Program (COP) Maricopa County provides free Valley Metro passes for the bus and light rail systems for commuting to/from work; a vanpool subsidy is also provided. Employees can decrease stress, decrease wear and tear on their vehicle and help the environment all at the same time.
