As a Support Service Professional (SSP), you will work one-on-one with a person living with a disability—supporting them in living a life of their choosing, in their own home and community. The Support Service Professional role consists of assisting, supporting, and guiding the individual in general areas of: health and wellness, communication, decision making, home management, transportation/mobility, and building relationships.
In this particular role, you will be part of a hands-on and dynamic team that supports a man in his early seventies. He has an active and curious mind, is very involved on his West Philadelphia block, and cares deeply about politics and social justice. He also happens to have various physical and developmental disabilities, most relevant being issues with vision and mobility. He needs support with general activities of daily living, self-care/grooming, moving around his apartment, using his computer, and very importantly, posting on Twitter. As part of this team, you will be responsible for supporting this person between the hours of 9PM and 7AM a couple nights a week. He has an atypical sleep schedule, and is frequently up and about overnight, but still needs support during those hours. If you consider yourself to be a night owl and want to fill a very important role in this person’s life, this work is perfect for you.
In this position, you will be working in the home and local community of the person you support. Often you will interact with family members, your co-workers, and other support team members, so respect and accountability are key! Our ideal candidate is someone who is a good communicator, who is dependable and kind, and who is committed to the idea that people with disabilities—just like anyone else in our society—deserve self-determination, equity, respect, and dignity. Some direct support experience would be a plus, but more important would be that your personality and ideas fit with the general vibe of this person’s home.
The individual and his family are all at a higher risk for severe complications from a COVID-19 infection. Therefore, the family prefers that support workers be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to ensure everyone’s health and safety.
