Position DetailsStewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.
SIPP in partnership with the National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center are seeking individuals to participate in the Traditional Trades Apprenticeship Program. Apprentices will receive introductory training in a variety of traditional trades and will develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship while helping to preserve our nation’s historic resources. This program provides apprentices with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector.
The apprentices will be part of the park’s masonry preservation team and will work side by side with NPS craftsmen learning all aspects of masonry preservation of historic structures from removing failed masonry fabric and mixing mortar, all the way to laying stone and applying finishing treatments.
Position Responsibilities will include:

Remove damaged portions of masonry walls and other architectural features
Learning how to mix functional mortars
Lay new stone accurately
Repoint mortar joints
Vegetation removal around buildings, park boundaries and visitor use spaces
Assist with vehicle maintenance

Minimum Requirements:

Moderate to heavy physical effort is required for this position, including occasional lifting or handling of objects over 50lbs using proper techniques.
Standing or kneeling for long periods and will be required to climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, work on uneven or angled surfaces such as a roof, and/or be able to work in confined spaces.
Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, climb and walk in all manners of environmental conditions such as rain, mud, and extreme heat or cold.
Must be able to provide own transportation to San Antonio Missions NHP
Must be 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 for Veterans with DD-214
Full vaccination against COVID-19 by the first day of employment and ability to provide proof of vaccination before starting
Preferred Qualifications: *
A career interest in building trade skills and/or historic preservation
Is comfortable working outside in varying weather conditions and at heights
Have a willingness to work hard and get dirty
Have a serious attitude toward safety all day, every day
Have the ability to think critically and creatively
Have positive attitude
Have ability to communicate effectively
Have a professional and respectful manner and works well within a team
Ability to commit to a six-month experience of combined training and hands-on work
Flexibility to work outside of traditional hours may be required
Have the desire and ability to complete all program training requirements in order to receive NCCER and OSHA certifications including assessments and all classroom and online coursework.

Participants who complete the program will receive Public Land Corps status for two years that can be used for securing employment with the federal government.
