About Drexel
Drexel is one of Philadelphia’s top 10 private employers, a comprehensive global research university and a major engine for economic development in the region. With over 24,000 students, Drexel is one of America’s 15 largest private universities. Drexel has committed to being the nation’s most civically engaged university, with community partnerships integrated into every aspect of service and academics.
About the Academy
The Academy of Natural Sciences was founded in 1812 for “the encouragement and cultivation of the sciences”. Since then, it has sponsored global expeditions, conducted pioneering environmental and systematics research, and amassed remarkable collections containing more than 18 million specimens from around the world and a peerless library and archive. Since 2011 its academic enterprise has been further strengthened through its affiliation with nearby Drexel University – a leading private non-profit research institution that focusses on innovation and entrepreneurship and provides a unique cooperative education program for its undergraduate and graduate degree students.
Today the Academy is one of the most important natural science institutions in the world. However, the world is changing fast and the Academy – directed by its Strategic Plan 2019-24 – is changing with it. Over the next five years the Academy will become a “force for nature” and advance its mission: “to understand the natural world and inspire everyone to care for it”. In so doing the Academy will build on its fundamental belief that diversity and inclusion generates better ideas, inspires creativity, and is essential to building a positive workplace so that in time it can become an institution that is of, by and for all Philadelphians.
Job Summary
The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University is hiring an assistant for two important WINS initiatives, Engineering WINS and WINS III. Women In Natural Sciences (WINS) is a free after-school and summer science enrichment program at the Academy of Natural Sciences. Since its founding in 1982, WINS has introduced hundreds of high school girls to future careers in science and other professions by providing hands-on science workshops, career and college exploration, and positive youth development.
EngWINS: The Academy of Natural Sciences has partnered with Drexel University: College of Engineering, School of Education, and local engineering professionals, through the Engineering WINS (EngWINS) program. EngWINS is developing the capabilities of working engineers and faculty to serve as mentors in a new initiative to develop interest, self-efficacy, and persistence in engineering careers among urban high school women. The Assistant will help facilitate communication between project team, mentors, and participants, oversee internships with engineering professionals, and assist the research team in all administrative duties of the project including but not limited to: scheduling meetings, taking notes at meetings, coordinating student and mentor meetings with researchers and chaperoning EngWINS field trips.
WINS III: The new WINS III program will support our WINS students in the first two years of their college experience. For the WINS III program the assistant will help develop and deliver in collaboration with expert partners the following program components:
A summer college preparation course, which will provide incoming college freshmen with detailed instruction on time management, organization, college course selection, understanding college supports for students-where to find them at college and personal budget management.
Coordinating and provide individual mentorship support from WINS program managers and staff from the Academy and its affiliate institution, Drexel University, to help navigate college resources such as financial aid, tutoring, and community building.
Support in securing summer internships throughout Philadelphia, by providing resume development, interviewing skills, and stipends to help off-set unpaid internship opportunities. Our focus on local companies will increase students’ familiarity with the regional STEM landscape and, regardless of where they are attending college, incentivize them to join the STEM workforce in Philadelphia after graduation.
