As the position description: A Youth Development Coach (YDC) has the unique opportunity to be a positive role model for young people in need. In order to give these young people the best chance for a fresh start, our youth development coaches provide them with the support and safety they need to develop critical problem solving skills and interrupt cycles of negative behavior. The Youth Development Coach (YDC) redirects the thinking and behavior patterns of residents through building healthy relationships and mentoring, in order to remove barriers for successful transitions into the homes and communities. Develops skills that will help residents in being productive citizens by providing structured programs designed to reduce recidivism, enhance self-esteem, social skills, increase academic performance, job skills, and improve mental and physical well-being.

Harris County Juvenile Probation Department – Be an Agent of Change:

Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for the welfare, safety, and security of residents while adhering to all departmental policies & procedures, Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) standards; federal, state, and local statutes at all times
Completes reports, and daily logs, at random intervals not to exceed the allotted time when documenting resident behavior and progress
Effectively completes National School Lunch checks as required
Maintains structured and clean work areas in the entire facility, especially in the units, dorms, rooms, classrooms, recreation areas, and hallways, etc.
Communicates noteworthy information to the unit and shift supervisors, casework staff, and the administration
Maintains appropriate training and certifications in accordance with departmental and TJJD standards
Operates departmental vehicles for the safe transport of juveniles as needed
Must be able to work scheduled hours according to assigned shift
Must be able to comply with the department’s Mandatory Stay Over (MSO) policy when administration determines that the safety and security of the juveniles necessitates for staff members to work additional hours
Performs other duties as assigned

This position involves working with challenging youth where the use of Crisis Intervention and De-Escalation strategies may be necessary to ensure the safety of both youth and staff.

Requirements

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
Knowledge of basic computer skills, to include Microsoft Office, word processing, and the Internet.
Possess a high tolerance for working in an emotionally demanding/stressful work environment.
Must be able to work night and weekends (Shift Work).
Must be able to exert (i.e., lifting, pushing, pulling) 20 to 50 lbs. of force occasionally (up to 1/3 of the time) and 10 to 25 lbs. of force frequently (from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to move objects.
Physically able to restrain a resident, if needed.
Ability to send and receive transmissions with two-way radio.
Ability to stand/walk through the majority of the shift.
21 years of age.
A valid driver’s license (Texas upon hire).

Additional Requirements

Every employee is subject to random testing for drugs and alcohol or if there is a reasonable suspicion to believe that the employee is under the influence of a substance prohibited by this policy while in the course and scope of employment.
All new employees are required to undergo and pass a physical examination administered by the Department Approved Contract Physician.

At the time of the physical, applicants must present evidence of tuberculosis (TB) skin test.
In the event of a positive test, the applicant will be required to provide additional documentation.

Upon receiving a conditional job offer, every applicant undergoes a criminal background check, drug screening, an achievement test, and psychological and physical examinations.
If a public emergency is declared by the county, staff could be assigned to other duties and/or facilities and/or under the supervision of another county department.

Certified copies of transcripts of educational credentials and/or college credits will be required during the hiring process.

Preferences

BA/BS degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Social Work & Behavioral Sciences
Residential experience working with children
Mental Health and/or Behavioral Health Technician Certification

General Information

SALARY:

Commensurate with Appropriate Experience

$17.23 per hour

Based on 26 Pay Period

Criminal History Checks for positions requiring state certifications:

Applicants applying for a position requiring a state certification must adhere to the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) Standards. Before making an offer of employment for a position eligible for certification, HCJPD will verify that the applicant meets the background qualification for the position according to TJJD Standards 344.300 & 344.400

§344.400 Disqualifying Criminal History:
(a) Applicants for Certification. An individual with the following criminal history is not eligible for initial certification or initial employment in a position requiring certification:

deferred adjudication or conviction for a felony listed in Texas Code of Criminal Procedure Article 42A.054 (formerly known as “3(g) offenses” under Article 42.12) or a substantially equivalent violation against the laws of another state or the United States, regardless of the date of disposition;
deferred adjudication or conviction for a felony other than those referenced in paragraph (1) of this subsection or a substantially equivalent violation against the laws of another state or the United States within the past 10 years;
deferred adjudication or conviction for any Class A or B misdemeanor in Texas or a substantially equivalent violation against the laws of another state or the United States within the past five years; or
current requirement to register as a sex offender under Texas Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 62. (b) Individuals Employed in a Position Requiring Certification.
