Position : Youth Residential Counselor

Job Description : POSITION PURPOSE
Under the instruction of supervisory residential personnel, the Youth Residential Counselor (YRC) establishes a rapport with detained youth, monitors security in both residential and program areas, and conducts individual and group counseling sessions. The YRC is required to regularly observe the interaction and behavior of youth who are engaged in various daily activities and assists in creating a positive and trauma informed environment which establishes a culture of trust, positive relationships, teamwork, and clear communication.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
· Conducts individual/group counseling sessions
· Interviews youth to gain background information
· Collaborates with child welfare, social service, and educational staff
· Maintains log of unit activity.
· Prepares incident reports,
· Submits unit repair requests
· Orients youth on the policies, procedures, operations, and rules of the facility and assists youth in adjusting to detention rules and regulations.
· Rewards appropriate behavior
· Encourages youths to discuss their behavior and personal habits/attitudes and guides discussion towards the establishment and reinforcement of appropriate behavior patterns.
· Requests and maintains special interest activity supplies
· Escort youth to various locations throughout the facility for different activities
· Encourages and supports youth’s involvement in recreational, educational, and religious program offerings
· Utilizes verbal crisis de-escalation technics and only as a last resort, employs safe physical management restraint procedures for highest troublesome youth
· Inspects living area of youth and facility daily to check for cleanliness, vandalism, contraband, escape attempts
· Contributes to a safe and positive work and environment.
· Performs other related duties as required by supervisory staff
QUALIFICATIONS
· A personal commitment to underserved populations and communities
· An associate degree or completion of at least 60 credit hours of study at an accredited college or university which has included at least twelve semester hours in sociology, criminal justice, secondary education or in a related behavioral science field degree or Highschool/GED equivalent and 5+ years of relevant youth residential work experience determined to be acceptable to the Hiring Committee is required; a bachelor’s degree is preferred.
· Demonstrated knowledge of relationship building techniques
· Familiarity with residential facilities
· Experience in youth work
· Competent with Microsoft Office programs, and internet applications
· Comfortable working with diverse personalities.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $18.96 – $21.00 per hour
