JOB INFORMATION

Zoning Investigator I positions provide information to the public and other City departments on various codes, ordinances, and compliance requirements with City regulations; perform limited development permit review and plan checks; review and analyze technical drawings and specifications; conduct extensive research and analysis; collect data; perform documentation and reporting; use available technology; inspect areas within the City for zoning, land use, development, building code, and related regulations; issue violation notices, citations and/or serve as a court witness; prepare written responses and reports; and perform other duties as assigned.
NOTES:
Employees in job classifications represented by Municipal Employees Association (MEA) are scheduled to receive a 5% general wage increase effective 7/1/2022.
Zoning Investigator I employees may be eligible for Career Advancement to Zoning Investigator II after gaining requisite experience.
Zoning Investigator I positions may be required to work unusual shifts, nights, and/or weekends for which they may receive additional pay.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.
EDUCATION: Associate’s Degree or equivalent education (i.e., minimum completed units = 60 semester/90 quarter).
NOTE:
Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for education lacked on a year-for-year basis. One year of full-time experience = 30 semester/45 quarter college-level units.
EXPERIENCE: One year of full-time experience conducting field and office investigative work in the interpretation, application, or enforcement of codes and ordinances.
NOTES:
Experience in the interpretation and application, or enforcement of administrative regulations and/or departmental policies is NOT qualifying.
City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.
NOTE:
You must provide your own vehicle for which mileage will be reimbursed.
HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
Bachelor’s Degree.
Extensive experience using a variety of computer software (e.g., Outlook, Word, and Excel), automated project tracking systems, internet, and other computer systems and programs.
Experience working with land use and zoning regulations.
Experience in the review of plans and other documents for conformance with land use and zoning regulations.
Experience working in a regulatory environment.
Experience working in a fast-paced, high-volume customer service environment.
Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to comprehend and explain complex regulations in a variety of formats (verbal, written, electronic).

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
