FMT- All lands – Position Overview:
The FOREST MANAGEMENT TECHNICIAN performs work related to the application of forestry practices in reforestation, timber management, engineering, surveying, recreation, fire protection, or forest practices within defined guidelines. Work is in support of the State Forest Program, Insect and Disease Program, Forest Practices or Fire Protection Program.
In this position you will perform a wide variety of tasks in the areas of timber sale preparation, fuels reduction, and timber stand improvements through thinning, piling, and burning of fuels. This position is supervised by the Southern Oregon Area Federal Forest Restoration (FFR) Coordinator and will function as a team member of a group working on restoration projects. This position will work to achieve the goals and objectives given to them by the Southern Oregon Area FFR Coordinator. The primary function of this position is to accomplish additive work on federal (USFS and BLM) restoration projects. This position will assist the USFS and BLM in accomplishing their management goals including, but not limited to, timber sale planning, pre-commercial thinning, piling, prescribed burning, both piles and broadcast, and brushing roads. This position will also implement all-lands, cross-boundary work to achieve forest restoration on a landscape scale. In addition, this position will perform fire suppression duties as needed.
This is What You Need to Qualify:
Eighteen months of experience working in the field of forestry or related natural resource area.
OR
Associate Degree in Forestry, Forest Engineering, Forest Recreation, Fire Protection or a related natural resource field of study;
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
NOTE: Employees must obtain and maintain the required motor vehicle license for the position.
NOTE: Some positions may require a Public Herbicide Applicators License after appointment.
Desired Skills : Candidates who are the most competitive will have the following skills, background, and experience:
Basic knowledge of map reading and interpretation.
Basic knowledge of procedures regarding working with forest chemicals, herbicides, machinery and equipment.
Basic knowledge of Forest fire practices.
Basic knowledge of General geographic information systems.
Skill effectively communicating verbally and in writing with others.
Skill with recognizing and correctly identifying different tree species.
