Position : Court Investigator – Spanish Speaking Preferred (Open and Promotional)

Job Description : The Superior Court of California, County of San Mateo, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Court Investigator. Court Investigators are responsible for conducting investigations of individuals who are the subject of petitions for conservatorship or guardianship in the court, preparing reports, and making recommendations to the court in probate conservatorship and guardianship cases. Investigations include personal interviews, facility visits, criminal and child abuse background screenings, review of legal documents and fiduciary accountings, report-writing, and evaluation of conservators’ administration. This position requires a thorough knowledge and understanding of applicable laws and court procedures, the ability to maintain effective working relationships with court officials, professionals and the public, and excellent verbal and written communication skills. Candidates must have the ability to be flexible in the hours worked based upon the availability of the clients. The Ideal Candidate will:

Have actual and related experience conducting investigations on a full time basis.
Have a working knowledge of casework in a social service setting.
Have experience with probate, social services, gerontology, mental health, and cognitive and developmental disabilities.
Have experience working in a legal or court setting.
Have a thorough understanding of issues that affect people with disabilities, the elderly, children, and families.
Have the proven ability to work independently and prioritize and organize work efficiently to meet deadlines.
Be able and willing to conduct interviews in various settings including hospitals, psychiatric units, jails, and personal residences.
Be able to problem-solve complex and sensitive issues.
Understand and maintain confidentiality.
Be able to maintain a high level of professionalism while meeting with a diverse population.
Have an understanding of court processes.
Have knowledge and experience in accounting.
Spanish Speaking is preferred.

Qualifications

Applicants for positions in this classification must have the following minimum qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in criminology, social science, nursing, or a related behavioral science.
A minimum of one year (two years preferred) of experience conducting investigative work.

Knowledge of:

Legal provisions of the Probate and related codes.
Principles, methods and objectives of individual casework investigation.
Laws relating to legal rights of individuals.
Administrative procedures of the Superior Court.

Skill/Ability to:

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with court officials, professionals and the public.
Prepare clear and comprehensive reports and correspondence.
Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Other Requirements:

Possession of a valid California class C driver’s license, or the ability to provide suitable transportation which is approved by the appointing authority.
Candidates must consent to fingerprinting.

Open & Promotional. Anyone may apply. Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, SEIU or AFSCME represented extra-help/term position prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination. Responses to the supplemental questions must be submitted in addition to our regular employment application form. The examination process will consist of an application screening (weight: Pass/Fail) based on the candidates’ application and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight: 100%). Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations, or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination.
