Position : Poison Information Provider
Job Description : Reporting to the Director, Michigan Poison & Drug Information Center and under the direct supervision of a certified Specialist in Poison Information, clinical toxicologist or medical director, the Poison Information Provider (PIP) works in a call center environment and answers and evaluates exposure calls from the public.
A poison information provider (PIP) is an individual who answers calls for a poison control center and does not meet the eligibility criteria for the Certified Specialist in Poison Information (CSPI). Individuals in professional training programs on educational rotations in a poison control center are not considered PIPs. The title and availability of the “PIP” position may differ at poison control center host institutions.
Essential functions are the primary duties/major job responsibilities that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation. The essential functions are listed in order of importance.
Under direct supervision, answer poison control calls, evaluate the toxic hazards and initiate appropriate triage, management and referral of toxicological emergencies presented by the public. Serve as knowledge resource assisting physicians in planning optimal management of toxicological problems.
Participate in ongoing problem resolution by evaluating laboratory and clinical data through follow-up calls to patients or health care facilities and providing additional triage, referral or management advice in conjunction with a Specialist in Poison Information or a consulting toxicologist, as appropriate.
Provide information and assistance to the public, health professionals, civil authorities and facilitate communication with poison center administration and the news media.
Participate in epidemiology surveillance and research mandated by the health department or funded by outside agencies
Assists poison center educator with various public health outreach initiatives, social media campaigns, and public service announcements.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Unique Duties
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Health care-related Bachelor’s degree (i.e. Health care educators, Chemistry, etc.) or Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing, (Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred), or Pharmacy (Doctor of Pharmacy preferred), or Allopathic or Osteopathic Medicine (MD or DO).
EXPERIENCE
Experienced (minimum 2 years of job-related experience)
If nursing degree, must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Michigan. Two to three years clinical experience, with some critical care or emergency department experience for nursing candidates.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Effective verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with health professionals, lay public and patients under stressful conditions. Interpersonal skills and tact to work with a variety of hospital personnel, patients, families and medical staff.
Analytical and clinical skills necessary to gather and interpret data from several sources in a timely accurate manner. Ability to retrieve and summarize pharmacologic and toxicological data from several sources in a timely accurate manner.
Must be able to work with and use both computers and a TDY telephone on a frequent basis.
