PUMPING PLANT OPERATORLOCATION:

*WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT, WASTEWATER COLLECTION SYSTEMS SECTION, COMPTON MAINTENANCE YARD/LONG BEACH MAIN PUMPING PLANT

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To operate and maintain sewage pumping plant equipment, buildings, and grounds; and to respond to alarms and emergencies involving pumping plants or sewers.
JOB SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Pumping Plant Operations and Maintenance, the incumbent’s duties can involve operating, tending, and maintaining sewage pumping plants, equipment, buildings, and grounds; operating the Long Beach Main Pumping Plant and monitoring the Districts’ pumping plant telemetry system, including diagnosing remote pumping plant operation, receiving citizen calls, investigating complaints and identifying complaint locations; responding to emergencies involving the Districts’ pumping plants or sewers; making daily record of inspection and plant operating data; operating a motor vehicle on an assigned route to inspect pumping plants; starting and stopping pumps to alternate operation; maintaining, greasing, and oiling pumps, blowers and compressors; entering underground spaces; inspecting and hosing down wet wells; working alone and with crew members cleaning wet wells; flushing sump pumps and cleaning probes; performing general maintenance tasks to maintain plant appearance; performing landscape maintenance such as cutting, edging and trimming lawns, bushes and trees; performing general pumping plant housekeeping duties such as cleaning floors, windows or equipment; identifying and reporting irregular mechanical or maintenance conditions; troubleshooting basic mechanical, electrical, or instrumentation alarms at the pumping plants; assisting Stationary Mechanics on routine equipment servicing or minor pump repair; assisting in training other employees who may act as relief pumping plant operators; and performing related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must possess a valid California Class C driver license -*AND*- Two years of experience performing duties related to the operation and/or maintenance of industrial process pumps.
EXAMPLES OF ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
The competitive selection process may cover a knowledge of: Pumping plant operations; principles of operation of a variety of non-submersible and submersible pumps and controls; safety rules and regulations; and basic hand tools. The ability to: Operate and perform routine maintenance to pumps and related equipment; work independently; keep records; use a variety of hand tools; perform manual labor; interact effectively with the public and other agencies; troubleshoot sources of sewer problems and identify affected sewers, storm drains and receiving waters; troubleshoot sources of alarms at pumping plants.

The selection process will consist of a written test weighted at 50%, and an interview weighted at 50%.
Candidates must receive a qualifying score on each selection component to move forward in the selection process.
