Summary of Purpose:
Oakland Community College is actively seeking four (4) full-time instructors in English, beginning mid-August 2022. English courses at OCC support all programs at the college, including technical and transfer, and all students at OCC must take at least one English course during their academic journey. Applicants should possess a Master’s degree in English. These positions are full-time teaching appointments that include introductory courses in English. Base teaching load is 30 credits per academic year.
The successful candidate will possess broad theoretical and practical knowledge in the areas of critical reading and writing, experience with a diverse undergraduate student population, and a strong commitment to effective teaching and active engagement in service to the department and College. Candidates must show evidence of high-quality teaching, innovation and collaboration, and an understanding and commitment to the two-year college mission. A teaching demonstration will also be required as part of the interview process.
Faculty duties include classroom instruction, assessment, curriculum development, professional inquiry, committee work and engaging with instructional technology. Teaching responsibilities may include both stand-alone writing courses and co-requisite, accelerated, or paired sections of developmental and first-year college writing. Teaching assignments may include various delivery modes, such as face-to-face, on-line, hybrid and/or blended formats during days, evenings and weekends with potential opportunity to teach creative writing and/or literature classes.
Typical Duties:
Instruction of a minimum of 30 credits in undergraduate English courses per academic year, distributed over 2-3 semesters.
Maintain regularly scheduled office hours to serve students.
Maintain relevant and up-to-date expertise in the discipline.
Participation in departmental responsibilities, including adjunct hiring and evaluation, scheduling, and long-range academic planning.
Participation in discipline activities, including curriculum assessment, course redesign and development.
Participation in college governance and academic committees.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
Strong background in teaching introductory English composition
Experience with curriculum development and assessment
Experience using a variety of formative and summative assessments to ensure classroom instruction leads to student learning and meets learning outcomes
Desire and ability to work as a critical thinker in a multi-cultural environment with a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice
Demonstrated proficiency in academic technology systems and/or online teaching experience
Minimum Education and Experience Requirement:
EDUCATION: Master’s degree (or higher) in English, which may include concentrations in Rhetoric and Composition, Professional/Technical Writing, Digital Media Writing, Literature and/or other related areas.
-AND-
EXPERIENCE:Two (2) or more years of instructional experience at the community college or university level.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Ph.D. in English or related discipline
Five (5) or more years of teaching experience at a community college
Two (2) – three (3) years of experience teaching professional/organizational/digital writing
Two (2) – three (3) years of online teaching experience
Evidence of engagement in learning communities beyond the classroom (committee work, advisor for student clubs, volunteer work at relevant nonprofits)
Leadership or active participation in academic program initiatives, professional organizations and/or related activities
