Supplemental Question:
The Havre Area contains diverse fisheries resources including large rivers, mountain and prairie streams, medium sized reservoirs, and small ponds. What fisheries sampling experience do you have? (reference water type sampled, equipment used, and types of fisheries data collected)

Special Information:
Candidates are expected to have a basic level of experience with operation and maintenance of fisheries field gear including gill nets, trap nets, electrofishing gear, jet and prop boats. Familiarity with computer applications, basic map reading/GPS units, and some knowledge of scientific data collection and entry is preferred.
This position requires working (sometimes alone) in isolated areas during adverse weather conditions. Position requires periodically working in various terrain and waterbodies. Working hours can be long and irregular, and out-of-town travel occurs periodically. Applicants will be required to submit a cover letter.
Havre is located in north central Montana and has a population of approximately 10,000 people. There are good medical and shopping facilities located within the city and Montana State University-Northern is located here as well. The Bear Paws Mountains and Missouri River Breaks are located within 60 miles and offer a wide variety of recreating opportunities such as skiing, hiking, camping, hunting, and fishing.

Identity of applicants who become finalists may be released to the public if the Department deems it necessary. Job Duties (narrative summary):
Fish Population Fieldwork. Conducts fish population surveys/inventories and laboratory studies to assess the characteristics and dynamics of fish populations and angler use by using appropriate fisheries sampling and survey methods, and operating standard fisheries sampling equipment. Obtains creel information from anglers on various lakes, ponds, and rivers by conducting interviews and securing biological, geographical, and demographic information.
Data Summary and Analysis. Collects, enters, proofs, and summarizes fisheries data for management decisions and report writing.
Administrative Duties. Performs administrative duties to implement regional fisheries program by applying organizational, clerical and data management tasks. Assist with angler education programs.
Equipment Repair and Maintenance. Performs general operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment necessary to carry out the Havre Area Fisheries Management Program.
Research and monitoring will require that the incumbent work in adverse environmental conditions performing field surveys, often requiring hiking long distances and/or spending overnights in remote locations. Requires lifting heavy objects on uneven terrain or in water, which may expose the employee to slick walking surfaces.
The incumbent must be comfortable or able learn to operate boats and 4×4 vehicles while towing boat trailers. Must have, or be able to acquire, knowledge and ability to use a variety of sampling gear (e.g., gill nets, seines and trap nets) some of which can be highly technical (GPS, GIS, and radio telemetry). Must be able to improvise and adapt field methods and techniques when conditions change.
Must have general experience with mechanical (watercraft and vehicles), electrical, welding fabrication, carpentry and organizational techniques. Perform general repairs and maintenance of all fisheries sampling gear including nets, seines and traps.
Physical and Environmental Demands:
Work will involve field research activities that occasionally require a change and re-organization of work schedules and overnight travel. Working conditions are routinely hazardous. Technician will work in/around water on lakes, river, and streams that may be dangerous, and work with/be exposed to potentially lethal capture equipment and drugs. Exposure to chemical agents and offensive sights and sounds. Extreme caution and rigorous protocol must be followed to prevent exposure to serious health hazards indoors and outdoors. Occasional exposure to outdoor hazards such as severe weather, water hazards, and extreme terrain is expected. Requires lifting heavy objects and carrying 75 lbs. on uneven terrain or in water, which may expose the employee to slick walking surfaces. In addition, work in and around watercraft is expected. Interactions with public may include landowners or anglers and hunters who have conflicting issues and concerns. The frequency of contacts varies depending on the activity under consideration, but some type of public contact is typically engaged in on a daily basis.
Typical situations encountered by this technician will involve field challenges relative to applications of standard techniques and adaptations to those techniques in a field setting. Adaptations to procedures in field operations may become necessary because of human safety issues, aquatic resource considerations, landownership issues, or environmental conditions. Integrating all of these factors into daily field operation decisions yet accomplishing study objectives will demand creativity within the bounds of the data collection standards and cooperation among field staff.
Field research activities will require good interpersonal skills that facilitate cooperation and support among the various affected interests working and living in the study area. Interpersonal relations will include communicating and cooperating with coworkers, landowners, and various publics to maintain support for the project. Coordinating various agency personnel supporting the field operations is often complicated and requires good problem solving and interpersonal skills.

Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Basic knowledge and understanding of or ability to quickly learn sampling field operations conducting surveys and performing technical processes and routines.
Familiarity with computer applications such as word processing, and spreadsheet applications.
Basic map reading skills and familiarity with map coordinate systems.
Good organizational and time management skills are needed as well as the ability to accurately collect and record data.
Applicants must demonstrate an ability to work with professional biologists, other research assistants and the public. Communication skills, both written and verbal,
Familiarity with boats and motors.
Ability to learn to operate a four-wheel drive vehicle with training.
Ability to work under direct supervision in potentially hazardous conditions is expected.
Experience with mapping software and the use of GPS units is preferred.
Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):
The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Experience or training in resource management, biology, laboratory, or work closely related to the specific duties of this position is preferred. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
