Job Description : Job Posting: Museum Director, Crocker House MuseumPosition Announcement: Museum DirectorThe Macomb County Historical Society, located in Mount Clemens, Michigan, seeks a dedicated, creative, and goal-oriented leader with a passion for history to serve as its Crocker House Museum Director.About the Macomb County Historical SocietyThe Macomb County Historical Society operates the Crocker House Museum, a Victorian era house built in 1869, and the gardens surrounding the house. The mission of the Society is to provide educational experiences about Mount Clemens and Macomb County history through the use of artifacts, rotating exhibits, publications and special educational programs. Our purpose is to collect and to preserve our local heritage and to instill an appreciation of the community’s unique history; particularly that of the Mount Clemens bath house era. The Society usually conducts 8-10 programs and fund raisers each year. Strong partnerships within the community and participation of our volunteers are vital to the organizationJob Description: The primary responsibility of the Museum Director is the management of the Crocker House Museum, which includes operation of the museum and stewardship of its collections. In conjunction with the Society’s Board of Directors and its executive committees, the Museum Director undertakes long- and short-range planning, policy development, budget execution, and development of the museum’s programs and services. The Museum Director manages a part-time office manager and approximately 40 volunteers who serve as docents and committee members supporting the core work of the organization. The Museum Director expands community outreach by representing the Macomb County Historical Society within the community and participating in events that increase awareness of Mount Clemens’ history and the related role of the Crocker House Museum. The Museum Director maintains focus on activities that will promote donation of relevant artifacts and funds to the museum.Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Museum Director: Supervises Paid and Volunteer Staff: Identifies, assigns, and supervises the work of the paid part-time office manager and the volunteer staff. Assures that all are appropriately trained and that adequate staffing is maintained to meet the museum’s needs and objectives. Creates a congenial atmosphere and work environment conducive for recruiting and retaining volunteers.Financial records, Reports, and Proposals: Performs ongoing daily financial management as well as long-term planning and reporting. Works with the Board of Directors to develop a yearly budget for the museum. Executes the approved budget and provides monthly financial reports to the Board of Directors. Oversees bookkeeping functions; works with the treasurer and accountant to maintain all financial records and conduct a yearly review.Planning: Works with the Board of Directors to perform strategic operational planning, as well as creating long-term, short-term, and annual goals and objectives for the organization. Provides periodic reports to Board of Directors on the execution of plansExhibits: Works with the Accession committee to develop and implement permanent and rotating exhibits for the Crocker House Museum and its off-site venues.Collection: Works with the Accession committee to ensure that items donated to the Macomb County Historical Society are appropriately reviewed, accessioned, conserved, preserved, and cataloged in the museum’s Pastperfect system. Assures that an inventory is maintained that accurately identifies and values all items in the Museum’s collection.Community Outreach: Works with the Event Planning and Fundraising committee to develop programs, community activities, and appropriate meetings to further the mission of the Macomb County Historical Society and benefit the communityWebsite, Promotion and Publicity: Promotes the Macomb County Historical Society’s museum, gardens and associated events and activities in local digital and print media as well as other local resources. Keeps the Society’s website and other social media current.Membership: Working with the Membership committee, works to increase membership numbers and member benefits, and maintains member records current.Activity Development: Sets goals for all major fundraising efforts, tracks spending and receipt totals, and reports to appropriate committees. Works with special event committees to create sponsorship levels as well as to solicit and process donations.Grants: Identifies grant opportunities and works to develop government, non-profit, foundation and other grant applications to support the operations of the Macomb County Historical Society. Responsible for the appropriate monitoring of grant execution and required reporting.Records: Keeps electronic records in an orderly and accessible system and monitors regular file back-up. Maintains hard-copy files in an organized manner. Provides accurate information and reports in response to appropriate requests.Facilities, Supplies and Equipment: Coordinates maintenance of the museum building, grounds, and equipment with the Maintenance committee. Provides for the safe and reliable operation of the Crocker House Museum. Maintains appropriate insurance for the protection of the Museum’s facilities, collection and operations. Maintains adequate supplies for Macomb County Historical Society, museum and garden operations within budget parameters.Museum Operations and Visitor Services: Regularly meets with the office manager to oversee coordination of all museum functions and services. Provides oversight and support, as needed, to the office manager who schedules group tours and coordinates volunteer staffing for regular open hours as well as special tours and events. May conduct some tours and educational programs. Maintains records showing utilization of the museum.Professional Development: Participates in educational activities and museum associations to keep abreast of the latest development in small museum and historical society management. Maintains individual job skills essential to the successful operation of the Society’s museum.Skills and Expertise Required:Supervisory skills, especially as concerns a volunteer staff.Experience with administrative management of an organizationAbility to serve as an articulate spokesperson for the Macomb County Historical SocietyExperience in development and fundraising, including foundation and government grants as well as corporate and private donations; demonstrated ability to develop partnerships and identify creative solutionsFinancial record-keeping knowledge and skills, to include budget creation and executionFamiliarity with preservation of historical artifacts and records. Appreciation of historic values.Ability to research and report on historical items and informationKnowledge of museum professional policies, issues, and strategiesFamiliarity with computer operation and knowledge of the following applications: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, PastPerfect, QuickBookssocial media, especially Facebook, Twitter, Constant Contact, Local Hop and InstagramInterpersonal and team interaction skills; ability to work with a diverse community and to work with standing and ad hoc committeesAbility to meet the physical demands of working with and transporting artifacts and materials in an historic building with non-standard stairsQualifications:The Museum Director will have a relevant bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years’ work in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience, demonstrating ability required to support a non-profit organization and manage service for a small historical society and museum staffed primarily with volunteers.Location: The Museum Director will be based at the Crocker House Museum, Mount Clemens MISalary: This is a full time, salaried position, salary range $40,000-$52,000, depending on experience, which requires some weekend and evening hours.
