Work on rotating shifts performing security patrols, traffic control/enforcement, investigation and first aid at accidents, detection, investigation, and arrest of persons involved in crimes or misconduct.b. Work an assigned shift using judgment in deciding course of action. Expected to handle difficult and emergency situations without assistance.c. Maintain normal availability by radio or telephone for consultation on major emergencies or precedent.d. Carry out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County, and City laws, ordinances, and policies;e. Respond to emergency radio calls and investigates accidents, robberies, civil disturbances, domestic disputes, fights, drunkenness, missing children, prowlers, abuse of drugs, etc. Takes appropriate law enforcement action.f. Interrogate/interview suspects and witnesses.g. Recognize, preserve, and document evidence.h. Prepare cases and testify in court proceedings.i. Prepare a variety of reports and records including, but not limited to: investigation, arrest and accident reports.j. Undertake community-oriented police work, and assists citizens with such matters as locked or stalled vehicles, crime prevention, drug abuse education and traffic safety.k. Coordinate activities with other officers and/or other City departments as needed. Exchange information with other law enforcement agencies, and obtains advice from the City Attorney, Judges, and Municipal Prosecutor’s Office regarding cases, policies and procedures.l. Maintain contact with police supervisory personnel to coordinate investigation activities, provide mutual assistance during emergency situations and provide general information about Department activities.m. Other duties as assigned.III PERIPHERAL DUTIES 10%: a. Maintain departmental equipment, supplies and facilities.b. Maintain contact with general public, court officials, and other City officials in the performance of police operating activities.c. Serve as a member of various employee committees.IV SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant.V SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.VI QUALIFICATIONS: a. Entry Level (Minimal):i. Must be 18 years or older.ii. Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid State driver’s license; applicants driving history will be taken into consideration.iii. U.S. citizen;iv. High school diploma or equivalent;v. Must be able to read and write the English language;vi. Must be of good moral character and of temperate and industrious habits.b. Preferred Education and Experience, but not required:i. A two-year or greater college degree orii. An equivalent combination of education and experience.c. *LATERAL TRANSFERS & INCENTIVE PAYi. Officers with less than 2 years’ experience at the time of hire will be considered entry level, Step 0 of the FY22 matrix ($27.76/hour).ii. Officers with between two and four years’ police experience, and hold a Basic Law Enforcement Certificate that would be recognized by Montana POST, will be placed at Step 1 of the FY22 matrix ($28.13/hour).iii. Officers with four or more years of police service and hold a Basic Law Enforcement Certificate that would be recognized by Montana POST, will be placed at Step 2 of the FY22 matrix ($28.50/hour).d. *ADVANCED EDUCATION INCENTIVEi. Employees possessing an Associate’s of Arts/Sciences degree: $10/pay period.ii. Employees possessing a Bachelor of Arts/Sciences degree: $20/pay period.iii. Employees possessing a Master’s degree: $30/pay period.VII KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSA):a. Some knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment;b. Skilled in basic computer operation and office equipment;c. Ability to learn operation of electronic equipment used in law enforcement;d. Ability to learn the applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations;e. Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition;f.
