St. Charles Health System is making a large investment in you and your career by holding this CNA Trainee Program. Once accepted into the CNA Trainee program, attendance to every class is mandatory.
At the successful completion of the CNA Trainee Program, the Trainee will apply to open System CNA position(s). Once certified as a CNA 1 through Oregon State Board of Nursing, the CNA Trainee will be transferred to their new CNA 1 position.

It is an expectation that the CNA Trainee will commit to working as a CNA 1 at St. Charles for a total of 12 months. The CNA Trainee/CNA1 will not be eligible for transfer to a different position for a period of 12 months from their start date into the program.

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: These departments provide 24/7 specialized care to patients throughout their hospitalization and discharge. These departments include Med/Surg, Medical, Surgical, Ortho/Neuro, Pediatrics, Inpatient Rehab, Critical Care Units, Procedural departments and floats.
POSITION OVERVIEW: While completing CNA1 coursework, the CNA1 Trainee will complete duties as a Patient Safety Attendant. The Patient Safety Attendant (PSA) will work with patients who have behavioral, emotional, psychiatric, social, medical, and/or correctional problems, and who may exhibit aggressive behavior. The PSA will work under the direction of an RN to provide constant observation on a patient who is in danger of causing harm to themselves or others if left unattended and facilitate a safe environment for patients and staff. The PSA will be assigned to the inpatient behavioral health units, emergency department, and inpatient care units as needed throughout St. Charles Health System. This position does not directly supervise any other caregivers
This position involves monitoring a patient 1:1 for safety to prevent: falls, disruption of medical devices, self-harm, flight risk situations, and other activities that may cause harm.
Additional duties to be performed when patient monitoring is not needed include: assisting with clerical activities as assigned, answering patient call lights, and assisting with patient transport and other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
Provides continuous observation and surveillance of assigned patients(s), and provides reality orientation, diversion activities, and assists with activities of daily living as appropriate and within scope of practice.
Provides safe patient transport throughout the facility as directed.
Performs and documents safety observation of psychiatric patients or patients in need of increased supervision for safety within the St. Charles Health system per policy.
Observes and document behaviors and changes in patient conditions and communicate the information to the Registered Nurse assigned.
Communicates, report, and documents any significant changes in patient condition.
Alerts nursing staff if there is a change in the patient’s behavior or condition or the patient requires assistance or other nursing intervention.
Utilizes crisis de-escalation techniques to assist in safely de-escalating patients. Assists with crisis intervention process of potentially dangerous patients. Utilizes AVADE training on approach as a last resort.
Searches unit, patients, and patient belongings for contraband, inventory of patient’s property and personal clothing.
Delivers customer service and/or patient care in a manner that promotes goodwill, is timely, efficient and accurate.
Supports the vision, mission and values of the organization in all respects.
Supports Value Improvement Practice (VIP- Lean) principles of continuous improvement with energy and enthusiasm, functioning as a champion of change.
Participates in creating a healing environment that supports all aspects of the care environment and the wholeness of each individual, patient and caregiver.

Provides and maintains a safe environment for caregivers, patients and guests
Documents all patient care with proficiency in compliance with hospital policies, procedures and regulatory agencies.
Conducts all activities with the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality. Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures, supporting the health system’s corporate integrity efforts by acting in an ethical and appropriate manner, reporting known or suspected violations of applicable rules, and cooperating fully with all company investigations and proceedings.
May perform additional duties of similar complexity within the organization, as required or assigned.
EDUCATION
Required: Successful completion of an accredited CNA1 course within 2 months.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION
Required: Must register for CNA1 certification test with OSBN within 14 days of completion of St. Charles Health System CNA1 course.
Must pass CNA1 certification through the OSBN following the completion of the St. Charles Health System CNA1 course within 90 days of hire.
AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Continually (75% or more): Standing and walking, keyboard operation, use of clear and audible speaking voice and the ability to hear normal speech level.
Frequently (50%): Sitting, lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 1-25 pounds. The use and operation of a motor vehicle for Home Health and Wound Caregivers.
Occasionally (25%): Bending, stooping/kneeling/crouching, climbing ladder/step-stool (varies by area), reaching overhead, lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 25-50 pounds, grasping/squeezing, ability to hear whispered speech level.
Rarely (10%): Climbing stairs.
Never (0%): Climbing ladder/step-stool (varies by area), operation of a motor vehicle.
Exposure to Elemental Factors
