The Albany Public Library is seeking two library aides (20 hrs/wk & 36 hrs/wk) to take on a variety of duties to deliver high quality services to the community of Albany, Oregon, in our two locations. While primarily working at the circulation desk, our library aides also have the chance to work and cross train in different areas of the library. We provide services in English and Spanish to our diverse community.

NOTE: These positions are benefits eligible (medical, dental, & vision). The 20 hour/week position is at a prorated cost to the employee. Approx. $217/mo. for employee only coverage up to a max of $629/mo. for full family coverage. The 36 hour/week position is at a full-time employee cost. Approx. $44/mo. for employee only coverage up to a max of $126/mo. for full family coverage. Working hours to be determined (will include evening & weekend hours.)
Essential Functions/Duties & Responsibilities
The duties listed are intended only as illustrative examples of the various types of work that may be performed by individuals in this classification. Any of the following duties may be performed. Checks materials out to patrons using automated circulation system; determines eligibility of patrons and issues cards for new library accounts; collects fees/fines for lost or overdue materials; explains library services; and resolves issues with patron accounts.
Assists patrons in locating materials and answering questions; provides information to patrons and demonstrates use of sources such as electronic databases, e-books, and library catalog.
Assists patrons with instruction on basic computer and internet usage.
Assists in maintaining library collections and facilities by straightening books, chairs, shelves, papers, and magazines; changing calendars; and emptying waste containers and book drops.
Provides technical support for the Lead Cataloging Librarian.
Processes new materials, which includes copy cataloging which entails selection of classification numbers and description headings and inputting information specific to our library; stamping and applying bar codes, spine labels, radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags; linking bar codes on new materials to computer records; activating RFID tags; maintaining the library catalog; and maintaining the physical aspects of materials through relabeling and repairing.
Processes new magazines and manages the magazines collection.
Pulls holds and searches for lost in-transit items.
Maintains the public bulletin board and free hand-out area in the Main Library.
Creates and distributes the monthly Library Events Calendar.
Provides Reader’s Advisories for patrons.
Conducts special programs for patrons as required.
Performs a weekly Storytime for preschool ages.
Schedules and assists in carrying out special programs including assistance in scheduling, publicity, refreshments, reservations, setting up, etc.
Conducts tours of library facilities for various educational or civic groups and interested individuals.
Serves as a member of various City and library committees as assigned.
Represents the City of Albany by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor. Regard everyone, internal and external, as a customer and deliver the best service possible in a respectful and patient manner.
Assists other staff in the performance of their duties as assigned.
Maintains regular job attendance and adherence to working hours.
Operates a motor vehicle safely and legally.
Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

Supervision/Lead Work Exercised
This is a non-supervisory position. Lead work/coordination of the work of others is not a typical function assigned to this position. Incumbents in this position may provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel.
Qualifications & Requirements
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A high school diploma or its equivalent, and one (1) year of library experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Associate degree in Liberal Arts or closely related field preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: principles and practices of modern library systems and programs and library circulation or processing techniques; knowledge of library classification systems and basic office procedures.
Skill in: operation of listed tools and equipment used.
Ability to: accurately maintain library filing systems; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; understand and carry out written and oral instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public; operate computers for data entry.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Fluency in reading, writing, & speaking the Spanish language is desirable.
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver’s license may be required.
The individual shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of the individual or others in the workplace.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
In the performance of the job duties, the employee will be working in an office environment under usual office working conditions. Work may also be performed in meeting settings in offices, conference rooms, and public spaces. The noise level in the work area is typical of most office environments, with telephones, personal interruptions, and background noises.
Travel between work locations is not a regular part of this classification. This position will work evenings and weekends.
The work environment for this position does not differ significantly from that which is specified for the job classification.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
