Job Overview:
The Civilian Accident Investigator investigates traffic crashes, prepares accident reports, and enforces vehicle and parking ordinances.
This position involves frequent contact with the public seeking Missoula Police Department services, which require repetitive exposure to graphic and disturbing criminal events. Duties require the ability to access crash sites where hazards can be unavoidable, and to work under adverse weather conditions that are uncontrollable.

Core duties and responsibilities to include:
Respond to traffic crashes, hit and run incidents, and safeguard the scene, protect the injured and others from injury
Investigate causes of accidents by interviewing involved parties and witnesses; record information on vehicles, drivers, passengers, and pedestrians involved; collect physical evidence and determine if violations of code or statute occurred, and issue citations
Write reports of crashes and enter them in computer for transmittal to state agencies
Meet with City and County Attorneys” Office to assist in prosecutions and preparations for trial; testify in criminal and civil trials, as needed; meet with opposing counsel and convey relevant information
Make requests for traffic control evaluations of problem intersections and areas, and notify the Street and Traffic Divisions of unsafe conditions when needed
Review Abandoned Vehicle log on computer and tag abandoned vehicles as necessary by ordinance
May train probationary police officers in crash investigation methods and techniques, and civilian volunteers on abandoned vehicle processing
Requirements for this job include:
A valid Montana driver’s license with a verified acceptable driving record
Must be able to pass a Police background investigation and sign statement of confidentiality.
Must obtain Criminal Justice Information Network (CJIN) certification with six (6) months of hire.
Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment fingerprint background check.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the Missoula Municipal Code and Montana state laws and regulations pertaining to traffic and parking
Knowledge of the policies, goals, and procedures of the Missoula Police Department
Knowledge of the street names and locations in the City of Missoula and surrounding area
Knowledge and ability to promote safe work practices and ensure compliance with City safety policies
Skill in understanding and interpreting complex regulations and guidelines
Skill in communicating, in person and in writing
Skill in preparing reports documenting the facts and actions regarding traffic crashes
Skill in using complex algebra and geometry formulas for crash investigation purposes
Skill in investigating traffic crashes and determining their causes
Skill in identifying parking violations
Skill in utilizing standard office equipment, including personal computers, copying machines, multi-line telephones, fax machines, and two-way radios
Skill in utilizing word processing, spreadsheet and database applications
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with City employees, and citizens
