NRS1 – Sudden Oak Death Forester – Position Overview:
In this position you will coordinate the implementation of treatments designed to eradicate the pathogen ( Phytopthora ramorum) responsible for Sudden Oak Death (SOD). Eradication treatments include setting up a treatment zone around identified SOD infected tanoak (and other infected host species) and then treating the area with herbicide to prevent re-sprouting of diseased vegetation. The treatment continues with the cutting, piling and burning of infected trees and nearby host vegetation.
This position is required to make landowner contacts, ensure progress on and completion of eradication contracts, provide contract progress reports, and participate in eradication efforts on sensitive sites. The contracts administered within the SOD program exist of contracts for herbicide application, hand cutting, piling, and burning, and mechanized logging. This position will work to determine which method of eradication (machine or hand work) is best suited for the particular site and fits best with the landowners objectives.
This position may also be required to check for completion on eradication work done by landowners themselves but which are being reimbursed by the program and to ensure strict compliance with the program’s guidelines. Tasks may also include monitoring of SOD prescribed burning, flagging and/or mapping SOD sites, field data collection, data quality control, sampling of suspected diseased vegetation, and basic reporting in support of SOD scientific studies.
This position may also provide SOD technical assistance to the public and assist with early detection programs such as stream baiting or bucket baiting. In addition to eradication efforts, this position may plan, coordinate, and layout host removal projects aimed at removing SOD hosts from areas where spread is likely to occur. These projects will have many of the same characteristics of the eradication sites but will occur in areas where there is no current known infestation.
This position may lead or coordinate the work of field technicians, seasonal, part-time, or temporary employees on specific projects. This position may also assist in carrying out general technical forestry and forest health tasks associated with program goals and objectives. Data collected from surveys and applied research aids the Department, landowners, and elected officials in developing and implementing management strategies to reduce pest impacts and protect the environment.
This is What You Need to Qualify:
Bachelor’s degree in forestry or natural resource area;
OR

three years of experience in forestry or natural resource program area and level of responsibility.
Desired Skills : Candidates who are the most competitive will have the following skills, background, and experience:
Ability to work independently with little supervision.
Ability to identify Pacific Northwest trees and shrubs.
Ability to identify common indicators of tree damage caused by insects, diseases, animals, and environmental factors.
Strong experience working with forest-related contracts and landowner agreements.
Proficiency with GPS devices and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
