The mission of the Office of Children’s Ombudsman is to help improve Michigan’s child welfare system through awareness, advocacy, public education, review and recommendation. The OCO promotes a healthy work environment with hybrid remote and office work options and flexible scheduling.

As the Public Education and Intake (PEI) Unit Technician, the appointed is the initial point of contact for the Office of Children’s Ombudsman (OCO) and is responsible for performing a variety of intake activities including reviewing and evaluating inquiry information to determine and propose appropriate referral course of action to either facilitate problem resolution, or to acquire accurate and pertinent information to determine where the contact should be sent internally within the OCO. The appointed is responsible for conducting initial interviews to compile investigative data by speaking with, informing, and providing referral information to callers to determine how best to assist the individual. The PEI Unit Technician performs and maintains entry of technical referral information from intake research from callers into the Michigan Child Advocate Investigation System (MiCAIS), to open cases and oversee referral tracking. In addition, the PEI Unit Technician will assist the PEI Unit Manager and the OCO Deputy Director with other various tasks and communications as assigned.

Position Location/Remote Office: The office is located in Lansing, MI. This position will work remotely or work hybrid (remote/office) based on operational needs. Candidates should confirm work location and schedule at the time of interview.
Required Education and Experience
Education
Possession of a high school diploma or a GED Certificate.
Experience
Departmental Technician 7
One year of experience performing experienced-level administrative support activities equivalent to the 7-level in state service.
Departmental Technician 8
One year of experience as a technician or paraprofessional equivalent to the entry level in state service.
OR
One year of experience performing administrative support activities equivalent to the 8-level in state service.
Departmental Technician E9
Two years of experience as a technician or paraprofessional, including one year of experience equivalent to the intermediate level in state service.
OR
One year of experience performing advanced secretarial or supervisory administrative support activities equivalent to the 9-level in state service.

Alternate Education and Experience
Departmental Technician 7
Completion of two years of college (60 semester or 90 term credits) may be substituted for the experience requirement.

Departmental Technician 8
Possession of a Bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the experience requirement.

Departmental Technician E9
Possession of a Bachelor’s degree and one year of job-related experience may be substituted for the experience requirement.

Leave Time

Full-time employees receive between 15 and 35 vacation days per year. Insurance and Other Benefits

Eligible employees can choose from a variety of health insurance plans, including a PPO, HMOs, and a High Deductible Health Plan with HSA (effective January 1, 2021). Other coverage includes vision, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance, as well as tax-deferred Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) for health, prescription, dental and vision eligible expenses, dependent care expenses, and Qualified Transportation Fringe Benefits (QTFB). Employees also have the option to purchase additional life, accidental death, and long-term care insurance, auto/home insurance, identify theft protection, and legal services.

Paid Parental Leave

Provides eligible individuals up to 12 weeks of paid leave immediately following birth or adoption of a child.

Deferred Compensation

Employees may invest income in a tax-deferred retirement investment program. The state offers two optional deferred compensation plans, the 457 and 401(k). Employees decide the amount deducted from their paychecks.

Retirement

Employees receive a minimum 4% state contribution toward their retirement fund. If an employee elects to contribute more, the state will match up to 3%. The Office of Retirement Services administers two different retirement plans for State of Michigan employees: Defined Benefit (DB) and Defined Contribution (DC). New hires can also receive up to a 2% employer match into a Personal Healthcare Fund and a lump-sum credit to a tax-deferred account if eligible.
