Job Description : The City of St. Helens is seeking a dynamic community Library Director to provide leadership and stewardship for all library operations. This position promotes community engagement and partners with other libraries and agencies to bring enhanced services to library patrons. The Director also provides support to the Library Board and assists in developing and implementing a strategic plan that best meets the needs of the citizens in the community.
THE COMMUNITY
Situated on the beautiful Columbia River, St. Helens offers views of Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, and Mt. Adams. A very pleasant hour drive to the west takes you to the Oregon coast while a 45-minute drive to the southeast takes you into the Portland metropolitan area. St. Helens is well situated for many outdoor activities including boating, fishing, walking, running, biking, hiking, golf, disc golf, and much more. St. Helens is the county seat for Columbia County and the largest city in the county with a population of approximately 14,000.
The downtown portion of St. Helens, near the riverfront, features a Nationally Registered Historic District encompassing 10 blocks, which includes residences and civic buildings dating back over a century. A recent purchase by the City of over 200 acres of waterfront property promises to enhance the livability of our town with a mix of development encouraging tourism, commercial growth, residential development, and water-related amenities.
THE LIBRARY
The St. Helens Public Library had its beginning in 1915 as a bookshelf in a local furniture store. Today, it is in the handsome Columbia Center which includes a 79-seat auditorium. The library is a vibrant organization that serves the community with programming and services for all ages. The creative and energetic staff includes the director, a reference librarian, a youth librarian, two library technicians, and four part-time library assistants. Recent accomplishments include the opening of a new makerspace, hosting a two-day genealogy conference featuring local and national speakers in a hybrid format, and the expansion of our Library of Things. The library’s up-to-date collection also includes digital music and magazines, ebooks, eaudiobooks, and digitized historical newspapers.
Partnerships with area schools, Head Start, parks and recreation, the local history museum, and other organizations provide opportunities for programming in the library and the community. Our youth programming includes storytimes, after school STEM activities, and of course, summer reading. The library is home to arts and writers’ guilds, book and author events, the Genial Genealogists, and the St. Helens Public Library Ukulele Orchestra.
