Position : Account Clerk I – Water Accounting
Job Description : GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
An employee in this classification handles all customer or resident inquiries, in person or by telephone, concerning questions or complaints about regular or final water billings and automatic payments.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
An employee in this classification is responsible for: issuing receipts for payment received at a register and processing payments and billing adjustments in the computer daily; opening the mail; generate out-of-cycle bills; processing automatic payments against billing stubs; track and maintain records of deposits for tools, taps, and meters; entering data into a computer; reviewing data for accuracy before issuing billing statements; preparing memos, letters, or other correspondence; and maintaining historical files. Additionally this position is responsible for resolving customer complaints with tact and thoroughness. This employee should be able to run reports using financial software, create and maintain Excel spreadsheets, perform related bookkeeping duties, and other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AT TIME OF APPLICATION
By the closing date of this announcement, applicants must:
Be a citizen of the United States or resident alien with the right to work in the United States; and
Have a high school diploma or a valid equivalency certificate; and
Have a minimum of one-year full-time paid work experience within the past three years in the use of computer menus and entering of data into computerized software programs; and
Have had a minimum of two years of full-time paid accounting, bookkeeping, or related clerical experience, including experience with office machines and Excel; OR have two years of college business courses or business school training; OR have an equivalent combination of education and experience; and
Have the ability to respond to customers via telephone and in-person in a courteous manner; and, work independently in resolving issues.
PARTS OF EXAMINATION AND WEIGHTS
Written Test – 60% Interview – 40%
A minimum of the top 15 qualified candidates with the highest passing scores on the written test will be invited to the interview. Applicants must pass the written test and interview in order to be placed on the eligible list.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to multi-task in an environment of frequent interruptions.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating instructions and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as interest, percentages, and allocations.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Have knowledge of accounting and spreadsheet software.
NOTE: At the time of appointment, applicants are required to pass a complete pre-employment medical examination conducted by a physician authorized by the City of Livonia.
