Job Description : The Position
The Beaverton City Library is looking for two Reference Assistants to join us for our busiest season of the year from May 30-August 20! If you are passionate about library public services, excited to share our summer reading programs with library visitors, thrive in a busy work environment, and excel at providing great customer service, we want to hear from you!
These positions provide a critical link between library visitors and the wealth of resources available through the library. Reference Assistants interact with hundreds of patrons each week, providing exceptional customer service in person, over the phone, and via email. No two days are the same and this job is often fast-paced and dynamic.
This is a 20 hour per week seasonal position with evening and weekend shifts. Both positions are at the Main Library There are two positions available, not to exceed 1040 hours total.
Responsibilities
Provide welcoming, courteous and efficient customer service to patrons of all ages from diverse backgrounds at our public service desks
Provide quick and accurate answers to patron’s reference and reader’s advisory questions using appropriate reference techniques in person at the library, as well as over the phone and email
Assist patrons in their discovery of library materials and resources, both print and digital
Assist patrons in the use of library computers, databases and electronic resources
Promote the library’s summer reading program to patrons
Promote an environment respectful of living and working in a multicultural society
Assist in maintaining a work environment with a culture of teamwork and communication
Provide assistance to our outreach team readying materials for events
Qualifications

Cares about providing excellent customer service
Communicates effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, including youth, families, adults, volunteers, and coworkers
Possesses an upbeat, can-do attitude that allows room for flexibility in an evolving workplace
Thrives in a fast-paced environment
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience in a library or customer service setting, or a combination of education and life experiences enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position.
Knowledge of effective customer service principles and practices
Ability to pass a reference and background check
Ability to pass a written exam
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous public library experience
Prior experience with Polaris ILS
Knowledge of Washington County Collaborative Library Services (WCCLS) policies and practices
Experience working with youth
Compensation
Wage Rate: $21.17 per hour
