The Unit Supervisor oversees and administers the Newberry Field Office, rustic state campgrounds, boating access sites, non-motorized pathways, and ORV trailheads in the Eastern half of the Upper Peninsula. This includes the supervision of a lead ranger, 3 ranger E’s, 4 state workers (or summer workers), and joint responsibilities for an ORV position. The purpose of this position is to provide high quality recreational opportunities to the public, while preserving and balancing the protection of the natural resources. This person performs scheduled and unscheduled inspections of the Unit, checking quality and quantity of work. Competency in leadership skills, safety and maintenance, public relations and financial management is required. This person will regard safety as a personal responsibility and respect the safety of other employees and the public. This work is performed with minimal, long range direction by the District Supervisor. This employee represents the Division with the legislative, local governmental units and business groups in relation to the administration of State Lands and facilities under his/her jurisdiction. The Unit Supervisor will also oversee various programs and facilities as assigned by the District Supervisor.

This position requires that the employee possess and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License. NOTE – Candidate will be given 6 months to obtain CDL, in the event they do not possess a CDL upon hire.

Required Education and Experience
Education

Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school.
Experience

Four years of park and recreation experience, including one year equivalent to a Park and Recreation Supervisor 9 or one year as a Park and Recreation Ranger 9.

OR

Four years of park and recreation experience, including two years equivalent to a Park and Recreation Ranger E8.
Alternate Education and Experience
Completion of at least 8 semester or 12 term, college-credit hours in natural resources, park management or outdoor recreation may be substituted for one year of experience as a Park and Recreation Ranger-E.
Completion of at least 15 semester or 22 term, college-credit hours in natural resources, park management or outdoor recreation may be substituted for two years of experience as a Park and Recreation Ranger-E.
Additional Requirements and Information

Leave Time

Full-time employees receive between 15 and 35 vacation days per year. Employees also receive 13 sick days per year and 8 hours of leave to participate in certain school functions or community activities. Employees may also qualify for up to 12 weeks of paid or unpaid leave for certain family or medical situations.

Holidays

State employees receive 12 or 13 scheduled paid holidays each year, including New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day.

Insurance and Other Benefits

Eligible employees can choose from a variety of health insurance plans, including a PPO, HMOs, and a High Deductible Health Plan with HSA (effective January 1, 2021). Other coverage includes vision, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance, as well as tax-deferred Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) for health, prescription, dental and vision eligible expenses, dependent care expenses, and Qualified Transportation Fringe Benefits (QTFB). Employees also have the option to purchase additional life, accidental death, and long-term care insurance, auto/home insurance, identify theft protection, and legal services.

Paid Parental Leave

Provides eligible individuals up to 12 weeks of paid leave immediately following birth or adoption of a child.

Deferred Compensation

Employees may invest income in a tax-deferred retirement investment program. The state offers two optional deferred compensation plans, the 457 and 401(k). Employees decide the amount deducted from their paychecks.

Retirement

Employees receive a minimum 4% state contribution toward their retirement fund. If an employee elects to contribute more, the state will match up to 3%. The Office of Retirement Services administers two different retirement plans for State of Michigan employees: Defined Benefit (DB) and Defined Contribution (DC). New hires can also receive up to a 2% employer match into a Personal Healthcare Fund and a lump-sum credit to a tax-deferred account if eligible.
