Locations: For position based out of Brookings work will be conducted primarily in Brookings, Port Orford and Gold Beach. For positions based out of Astoria, work will be conducted primarily on the commercial docks in Astoria , Warrenton, and Garibaldi. For the position based out of Newport work will be conducted in Newport, Depoe Bay, and Pacific City.

Job Description: What you will do: Collect fishery and biological data from commercially landed marine finfish from the relevant ports. Collect, code, and enter trawl and fixed gear vessel logbooks, as well as other data-related projects. Help provide public contact/reception in the field and at the Port offices. The permanent Astoria position may require filling in for the Port Biologist during any short-term absences. Assist the Port Biologists with training, scheduling, and evaluating the work of seasonal employees working in the North Coast area and relate information to the Project Leader in Newport.
The person in each position is expected to learn proper identification of common marine fishes; effectively communicate with commercial harvesters, anglers, and the general public; to accurately and neatly record and summarize field data from interviews; enter field data into a web-based application; and collect and process biological samples. Other duties may include sampling fish at-sea on one-day trips aboard commercial fishing vessels or research vessels and may include participating in NOAA Fisheries’ annual trawl or hook-and-line surveys at sea for up to ten days.
These positions require a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. All positions will include some weekend (Saturday and Sunday), early morning and late evening work. The positions may be physically demanding. Employees will occasionally be working independently in adverse weather conditions.
The permanent position in Astoria requires a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board. There are some exceptions to this (e.g., Coast Guard Boat Operator License or commercial fishing license). For further information, access the Web site at www.boatoregon.com . Requirements/Requested Skills: Minimum qualifications are not established for this position; however, we are seeking applicants with the following related skills and experience: monitoring commercial fisheries, identifying marine fish species, collecting and accurately recording field data, computer skills, and customer service , and who possess or are in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences. Preference for interviews may be given to candidates with this background.
Criminal Records/DMV Check

Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background and/or driving information may disqualify you from further consideration.
