Job Description : The Michigan State University Libraries is seeking a forward-thinking and creative leader for the position of Head of Reference and Discovery Services. The Reference and Discovery Services team provides front-line research and reference support for students, faculty, staff and community patrons of the MSU Libraries, and it is an important part of the critical teaching and learning role the Libraries have at Michigan State University. In support of new initiatives in the MSU Strategic Plan and in the MSU Libraries Strategic Plan, the Libraries serve as a center of activity and engagement on campus, with librarians empowered to support both student development and transformative research activities. The Reference & Discovery Services unit plays a key role in accomplishing this work.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Teaching, Learning and Research Engagement, the Head of Reference and Discovery Services is responsible for the overall management of the Reference and Discovery Services unit, including in-person services at the Reference Desk, telephone support, e-mail and chat services, and Peer Research Assistant services at the MSU Engagement Centers. This unit is closely integrated with other units such as Circulation and the Liaison Librarians to provide a comprehensive network of support for research, teaching and learning.

Responsibilities:

Leadership, planning, implementation and evaluation of Reference and Discovery Services work, policies, and procedures.
Works closely with staff and librarians from various units to understand and address research support needs and maintain a system of continual communication and referral between units to achieve unit, departmental, divisional, and library-wide goals.
Supervision, training, and development of new and continuing staff assigned to Reference and Discovery Services. Oversees unit scheduling and adjusts staff assignments as necessary. Oversees student workers in the Peer Research Assistance program.
Evaluates how well reference programs, services and collections are meeting the curricular, research and service needs of the MSU community.
Overall collection development for reference materials (including databases); Selects current and retrospective materials in all appropriate formats to meet general and specialized needs in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
Advises on and monitors the unit’s budgeted funds for materials, student labor, equipment, and supply requests.
Participates in the unit’s full range of reference activities. This includes scheduled reference services at the Reference Desk, including evening and weekend hours, and participation in virtual e-mail and chat services.
Represents Reference & Discovery Services to other library units and other MSU offices or departments as appropriate. Attends appropriate division and library-wide meetings. Represents Reference & Discovery Services interests in consortia meetings and discussions, such as those with the Big Ten Academic Alliance and the Research Help Now consortia.
Takes an active role in appropriate scholarly and professional organizations; participates in committees, conferences, and workshops; engages in writing and publication consistent with primary duties.

Librarians are appointed as regular faculty in the continuing appointment system and are engaged in professional development and scholarly activities related to their position in addition to serving on library and university committees as elected or assigned.

Required Degree

Masters -Library and Information Science

Minimum Requirements
Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited institution.
Three years of progressively responsible professional experience in an academic library.
Extensive experience in Reference Services, including chat, email and in-person reference.
Knowledge of chat and email reference software such as LibAnswers.
Ability to successfully supervise, mentor, and train librarians and staff.
Demonstrated ability to lead teams and build partnerships across disciplines.
Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively and to promote teamwork, diversity, equity, and inclusion within MSU Libraries and the campus.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Desired Qualifications
Experience working with first year writing students
Experience applying for and managing grants.
Experience successfully supervising librarians and staff.
