Job Overview:
This position is the Helena Unit Fire Team Leader on the Helena Unit. The position is responsible for implementing operational activities associated with fire prevention and suppression; providing wildland fire planning and professional assistance; supervising and training fire crews; developing and coordinating training programs; investigating and enforcing forest use laws, rules and policies; educating and informing the public of fire prevention and fire management practices; and providing professional assistance in carrying out the Unit’s forest management programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Operations, Implementation and Resource Coordination:
Provides operational oversight and expertise in implementing fire management plans, coordinating resources and providing leadership in fire suppression efforts by commanding and controlling resources during specific or multiple fire incidents, providing fire investigation and enforcement within the Helena Unit fire protection area, procuring supplies and equipment, providing expertise in Hazard Reduction Agreements and related procedures, rules, laws and practices, and a wide variety of practical and professional applications of forest management.
Planning and Professional Assistance:
Provides professional fire planning and expertise for the Unit’s fire management program by implementing prevention and initial attack plans, providing advice and recommendations to cooperating counties, developing risk rating plans for landowners, and providing consultation and professional assistance to contractors and other users of forest resources.
Supervision & Training:
This involves recruitment and selection, assigning and reviewing work, training, establishing performance standards and evaluating performance, handling corrective action, and recommending termination if necessary.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):
The required knowledge, skills and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in forestry or a related resource management field and 2 years of progressively responsible job-related experience in fire and forest management. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered.
Physical and Environmental Demands:
The position’s work is conducted in both a normal office environment and in the field. Field work involves exposure to varying weather and road conditions, and moderate amounts of walking and climbing on rough, uneven terrain. The ability to perform physical labor is a job requirement. Fire suppression duties include dangers and risks associated with erratic and unpredictable fire behavior, walking and climbing on steep terrain, and rolling stones and falling snags. The position regularly encounters dirty, dusty, smokey and noisy conditions and occasional low level flights in fixed and rotor wing aircraft, and is required to drive vehicles on unmaintained roads and trails in all weather conditions.
The incumbent is required to perform physically demanding work during fire season (digging fire line, walking and climbing for extended periods over rough terrain, carrying equipment and supplies) for shifts in excess of 12 hours for several days duration.
Incumbent must be in good physical condition to achieve a physical fitness rating of “arduous” (as defined in DNRC guidelines).
SPECIAL INFORMATION: Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States. A valid driver’s license is required with less than 12 conviction points in the most recent completed 36 months.

ELIGIBILITY TO WORK: In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act, the person selected must produce within three days of hire documents that show authorization to work in the United States. Examples of such documentation include a birth certificate or Social Security card along with a driver’s license or other picture I.D., or a U.S. passport, or a “green card”.

Applicant Pool Statement: If another department vacancy occurs in this job title within six months, the same applicant pool may be used for the selection.

Training Assignment: This agency may use a training assignment. Employees in training assignments may be paid below the base pay established by the agency pay rules. Conditions of the training assignment will be stated in writing at the time of hire.
