Special Information:
Kalispell is a dynamic and growing community in Flathead County of Northwestern Montana. The Flathead River and its tributaries, the Stillwater River and the Whitefish River flow into and through the Flathead Valley. Flathead Lake, Glacier National Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness are all within 30 miles of Kalispell. The is an abundance of recreational opportunities in the area. The influx of seasonal recreationalists and new people moving to the area increases the demand for educational outreach and conflict response work conducted by carnivore conflict specialist. This position will work with landowners, businesses and the general public by providing preventative information and materials to reduce conflicts and response to human/wildlife conflicts when the do occur.
This position is seasonal, less than 6 months. Work schedule is varied, but typically 40 hrs. per week. Work shift is also varied and could require working at odd hours, weekends and during holidays.

Identity of applicants who become finalists may be released to the public if the Department deems it necessary. Job Duties:
The Carnivore Conflict Technician assists with implementation of regional grizzly bear, black bear, lion, wolf and other carnivore conservation and management activities, with emphasis on preventing, mitigating, or resolving carnivore/human or carnivore/livestock conflicts. This includes instructing the public on techniques that will prevent or alleviate potential wildlife/human safety concerns. The Carnivore Conflict Technician responds to, evaluates, and takes effective action on animal conflict, depredation and public safety problems and concerns, when warranted. Demonstrated certification or acquiring certification to capture and handle wildlife will be required. The Carnivore Conflict Technician will participate in and/or conduct in grizzly bear, black bear and/or mountain lion captures in response to or to mitigate human/wildlife conflicts. The Carnivore Conflict Technician is responsible for collecting, entering, compiling and interpreting data for annual reports. The Carnivore Conflict Technician participates in and conducts educational efforts related to living with wildlife and reducing wildlife/human conflicts, and coordinates with Conflict Specialists, biologists, wardens, other agency staff and the public as needed to respond to and reduce conflicts.
Physical and Environmental Demands:
Work will more than likely involve field activities that may require flexibility in work schedules, travel, and lifting heavy objects. The technician will work with/around wildlife that may be dangerous, and work with/be exposed to potentially lethal capture drugs making working conditions routinely hazardous. Exposure to potentially harmful pathogens, chemical agents and offensive sights and sounds are routine. Extreme caution and rigorous protocol must be followed to prevent exposure to serious health hazards indoors and outdoors. Occasional exposure to outdoor hazards such as severe weather and extreme terrain is expected. The technician may work in and around aircraft.
Typical problems encountered by the technician will involve field challenges relative to applications of standard techniques and procedures and the adaptations of techniques and procedures in a field setting. Specifically, the technician may need to decide when, where and what modifications or adaptations would be necessary and appropriate to complete a specific task. Adaptations to procedures and modifications of field operations become necessary because of human safety issues, animal welfare considerations, landownership issues, or environmental conditions. Integrating all of these factors into daily field operation decisions yet accomplishing study objectives will demand creativity within the bounds of the data collection standards and cooperation among field staff.
Field activities will require good interpersonal skills that facilitate cooperation and support among the various affected interests working and living in the project or program area. Interpersonal relations will include communicating and cooperating with coworkers, landowners, and various publics to maintain support for the program or project. Coordinating various agency personnel supporting the field operations is often complicated and requires good problem solving and interpersonal skills.

Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Basic knowledge and understanding of biology, animal ecology, anatomy and population dynamics is required. The ability to safely capture and handle wildlife is preferred. Experience and training in the use of chemicals to immobilize wildlife is preferred. Demonstrated experience working with large and dangerous carnivores is preferred. Knowledge of safe collection of biological samples including blood and tissues is preferred. Knowledge of conflict prevention methods such as electric fencing is preferred. Microsoft Office Suite and basic computer skills is required. Ability to safely use firearms is preferred. Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the use of telemetry equipment is required. Ability to maintain professionalism during times of conflict with members of the public and good communication skills (both verbal and written) is required. The ability to work both unsupervised and under direct supervision is required. The ability to work alone and in a team environment is required. The ability to lift at least 40 lbs. in required. The Carnivore Conflict Technician must demonstrate the ability to problem solve and make good decisions related to field work safety and efficiency.
Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):
The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and experience equivalent to a minimum of two years of college work towards a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, fish and wildlife management, animal ecology, biology, or a closely related field and related work experience. Combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
