Job Description : Threemile Canyon Farms is a sustainable crop farm and dairy operation in Boardman, OR. Threemile has a long history and reputation of stewardship. Even from inception, the idea of the farm was a “closed-loop” system resulting in zero waste. Threemile was recognized for its practices when it received the 2020 Sustainability Award from the US Dairy Center for Innovation. The farm also takes its responsibility to animal welfare very seriously and has received high marks, including a perfect 100 score, from an independent auditor. Threemile is also a steward of community and human resources. A majority of team members are represented by the United Farm Workers, with whom Threemile has had a close working relationship for more than a decade (confirm).
While operated as a local business, Threemile is owned by R.D. Offutt Company, a family-owned and -operated company based in Fargo, N.D. R.D. Offutt is comprised of other business entities in the agriculture/construction equipment, farming, real estate/development, and food production industries.
We are looking for a Director of Communication and External Affairs to bring messaging, partnerships, and advocacy to the work we do of feeding the world. This role will become the voice for Threemile and be dedicated to creating internal and external communications strategies, including working with the media, policy makers and community leaders. The role is a member of the Threemile senior leadership team that sets the strategic direction of the business.

Specific Duties Include:
Creates and executes communication strategies for internal and external parties.
Serves as primary media contact for farm operations and manages all public relations situations, including acting as the voice and spokesperson of the organization.
Works closely with legislative liaison team to provide messages and materials to supporting legislative goals.
Assesses the external landscape for opportunities and threats; provides senior leadership with insights and guidance; develops messages, tactics and content that address an ever-changing environment.
Directs the generation of digital and social content – both editorial and visual – that engages specific audiences and has measurable impact.
Develops written content including editorials, letters to policy makers, position papers and other materials to advance the company’s goals.
Supports the crisis communication function, should a need arise
Partners and guides outside firms that provide additional support and resources as needed.
Builds strong and professional working relationships with team members at all levels of the organization and exemplify teamwork & camaraderie.
Handles all aspects of work with integrity and support an ethical work environment.
Ensures that the company/location reputation and image in the community is consistent with R.D. Offutt Company Core Values, and that business relationships with all stakeholders are not compromised.
Follows all safety rules and regulations while performing work assignments and adhere to all policies and procedures as specified in company manuals and as directed in the employee handbook.
Proactively seeks and participates in available company-sponsored training, in an effort to develop and advance knowledge base and skill set.
Performs all other duties as assigned by management in a professional and efficient manner.
Job Requirements:
10+ years of experience in the field or in a related area.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
Experience across multiple areas of Corporate Communications including media relations, stakeholder engagement, public affairs and social media.
Strong understanding of Agriculture and/or Food Production issues preferred.
Candidate must be a self-starter who works well both independently and as part of a team.
Proven experience in issues management, messaging and narrative development.
Results oriented with an emphasis on both individual and team accountability with the ability to delegate, supervise and perform hands on tasks as dictated by the situation.
Excellent verbal, written, presentation and informal communication skills with an ability to adapt the communication style for the situation.
Ability to travel to Boardman, OR at least twice a month to work with the team there and stay connected to farm operations.
Candidates must have valid work authorization and be able to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship.
