POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the guidance of the SVP of Marketing and Communications, the Communications Director for the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit intentionally fosters a cause-centered culture that is welcoming, genuine, hopeful, nurturing, and determined and also builds the community’s understanding of the YMCA’s commitment and impact through development and implementation of effective internal and external communications strategies using an array of communication platforms in a highly dynamic environment. This includes: social media, special events, branch and community activities. The Communications Director is responsible to help share the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit’s story effectively, and to support the growth and maintenance of members, donors, staff and volunteers. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Support branch and association staff with creating effective messaging for print, broadcast and social media.
Conduct the coordination of communication necessary to promote the association calendar of activities and events.
Support the planning and marketing of both branch and association key special events.
Support the design and implement social media strategy to align with business goals inclusive of identifying appropriate platforms content planning and scheduling.
Perform research on current benchmark trends and audience preferences.
Generate, edit, publish and share engaging social media content daily (e.g. original text, photos, videos and news).
Monitor SEO and web traffic metrics/provide related statistics and reports.
Collaborate with other teams: programming, memberships and community initiatives, to effectively tell the YMCA story within brand guidelines.
Oversee social media accounts’ content (e.g. Facebook timeline, profile pictures).
Suggest and implement new ideas to develop brand awareness, like promotions competitions.
Stay up-to-date with current technologies and trends in social media, tools and applications.
Support establishing contacts with media representatives.
Write and submit press releases when appropriate.
Maintain updated files of YMCA’s media relations (both press and electronic).
Support building relationships with internal and/or external partners or key stakeholders, such as service groups, community organizations or companies, to support Y Activities.
Make presentations about the YMCA as needed.
Train assigned staff/volunteers to use various social media platforms to share the Y Story.
Attend Y events to capture images/interviews and be able to work occasional nights/weekends.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred.
3 years of experience in a similar role is required.
YMCA Team Leader experience in membership or marketing preferred.
Excellent computer skills and experience with standard business software.
Excellent written and public speaking skills.
Must have strong interpersonal, public relations and communications skills, including the ability to make presentations and handle media inquiries.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Must be able to work on multiple projects simultaneously within deadlines.
