Are you experienced in crisis communication?Do you have experience or passion for advancing racial equity through written, online, and in-person communications and community engagement?Then you might be a great candidate to join our team as a Public Information Officer (PIO)!About The OpportunityAs a Public Information Officer working within either (1) the Economic and Community Development Department or (1) the Parks & Recreation Department, you will develop and manage strategic communications, informational activities, and branding and marketing efforts to achieve the department’s communications and outreach objectives.You will serve as a department spokesperson and oversee public and media relations while working closely with the City’s Communications Division.Examples of Essential WorkEffectively communicating and disseminating information through written articles, social media, webpage updates, videos, fact sheets, brochures, and other informational materialsEnsuring that City communications are effective in reaching culturally specific audiences, including underrepresented and underserved communities of color;Providing information during and in response to crises, emergency incidents, and other critical situations. Working closely with the assigned Department Director, Communications Division Manager, and City communicators to coordinate Citywide updates and responses to questions;Responding to requests for information from community members, media, external organizations, and departments (or designating an appropriate spokesperson);Analyzing data and preparing clear, concise, and comprehensive correspondence, reports, studies, and other educational materials, including newsletters, budget narratives, internal communications, policies, and guidelines.For complete job classification details, please click hereSuccessful Candidates Will Have Experience In: Developing and managing strategic communications, informational activities, branding and marketing efforts to achieve communications and outreach objectives;Writing and communicating through social media, video, electronic and/or print newsletters, news releases, brochures, and other communication tools;Serving as a spokesperson or providing public and media relations services;Promoting and marketing events;Engaging community through in-person conversations and online communication; and,The ability to take complex information and communicate it in a way that makes it accessible and understandable to the entire community.*Department Assignments*There are two (2) available job vacancies within this post: One PIO will be embedded in the Economic and Community Development Department, and the other PIO will be embedded in the Parks & Recreation Department.Economic & Community DevelopmentParks & Recreation*This new PIO will be embedded in Hillsboro’s Economic and Community Development Department. The PIO will be responsible for developing and implementing the departments’ strategic communications plans and associated campaigns under the direction of the Communications Division Manager and the Economic and Community Development Director.This new PIO will be embedded in the Parks & Recreation Department, an award-winning parks and recreation agency dedicated to providing diverse, innovative, and exceptional recreational and cultural opportunities that enrich the lives of all community members. The PIO will be responsible for developing and implementing a Parks & Recreation Department Strategic Communications Plan and associated campaigns under the direction of the Communications Division Manager and Parks & Recreation Director.Current & Upcoming Projects: Support the community visioning for the 10th Avenue/Calle Diez project and communicate the implementation of connected short-term projectsAssist the City’s business recruitment and retention efforts, including target sectors such as the semiconductor industry, by promoting the strategic advantages of doing business in HillsboroCommunicate the City’s commitment to addressing housing affordability and the implementation of the City’s Affordable Housing Plan, including the Nueva Esperanza development projectSupport Development Services with communicating announcements and updates on development process changes and highlighting key development projects, such as the Block 67 site redevelopmentCreate awareness for community planning and policy making, such as the Washington County/Hillsboro Transit Study and community engagement opportunitiesCurrent & Upcoming Projects: *Promote the recently opened Hidden Creek Community Center’s (HCCC) programs, classes, activities, and facility rentals. HCCC is a two-story, 51,000-square-foot facility with a community room, classrooms, a two-court gymnasium, two fitness studios, a fitness center, outdoor sports courts. and outdoor spaces.Support community engagement related to development of the City’s future inclusive park and playground.Craft communications that enhance partnerships with communities of color, including our large Latinx community.Promote special community events, such as Pride Month, El Grito, and the new and upcoming La Strada dei Pastelli Chalk Art Festival.Promote and expand public outreach for the City’s Parks & Recreation System Plan, a comprehensive evaluation of the City’s current park system and our community’s equitable vision for the future park system.Acceptable Experience and TrainingBachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field, and 5 years’ experience in public relations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job, such as those listed above. Oral and written bilingual (Spanish) skills are ideal.Licensing/Certifications*Valid Driver’s License and safe driving recordThe benefits package includes family medical, dental, and vision insurance, VEBA, employee life, accidental death and dismemberment, and long-term disability insurance, retirement (PERS/OPSRP and social security), holidays, vacation, sick leave, voluntary health promotion program, employee assistance program, credit union, and deferred compensation programs.
